Role description:
Arcadis is seeking an Urban Designer for the Architecture & Urbanism (A&U) division within the Places global business area. This position can be located in London or Manchester, UK.
We are searching for a talented and enthusiastic Urban Designer with passion, drive, and abilities to communicate visually and verbally. The successful candidate will engage with some of the most exciting developments and regeneration projects both in the UK and internationally.
Candidates with the right skills will have exciting opportunities to help grow our business, and as such we are looking for individuals that are entrepreneurial and aware of the market context in the UK.
As a Senior Urban Designer, with a relevant qualification and relevant project experience, you will join our team to support senior colleagues in the production of masterplans, urban design guidance, planning strategies, design & access statements, and capacity studies for strategic planning and urban design commissions for public and private sector clients. You will have experience working on residential, mixed-use, and regeneration projects in a UK context. You will work closely with planning colleagues, so an appreciation of the UK planning system, policy framework, the current planning agenda, and key issues is an advantage.
Role accountabilities:
- Establish and coordinate the design framework of projects.
- Apply understanding of design philosophy of projects.
- Resolve technical and design issues within the project scope and escalate all others to ensure project objectives are met.
- Work with key stakeholders to clarify the scope of the project and the specific client and project criteria that are to be met.
- Contribute to the delivery of projects to meet client expectations.
- Support direction and technical advice to wider team members and external resources, identifying and ensuring the resolution of any issues.
- Work collaboratively with other design disciplines to ensure the integrity of the overall design or solution.
- Produce visual analysis and design within the associated documentation and reports; ensure these meet or exceed client expectations and Arcadis quality standards and comply with national or local standards and codes of practice.
- Support senior team members to develop and prepare winning project proposals and bids.
- Further develop and maintain a good understanding of the services delivered by Arcadis and client businesses to enable personal performance improvement and career development.
- Develop own capabilities by participating in assessment and development planning activities as well as formal and informal training and coaching. Develop and maintain an understanding of relevant technology, external regulation, and industry best practices through ongoing education, attending conferences, and reading specialist media.

Qualifications & Experience:
- An open and curious mindset and a genuine interest in how our cities and urban areas adapt and change globally.
- Experience of working in a variety of scales and contexts in the UK. Project experience of urban regeneration, mixed use developments/innovation districts, as well as large scale campuses and estates preferable.
- Minimum Bachelor level qualification in urban design/architecture/landscape and practical experience in urban design and master planning. An architectural background would be beneficial but is not essential.
- At least 3 years professional experience.
- A broad understanding of the UK Planning System.
- Excellent graphic, written, and spoken communication skills. Innovative use of Adobe suite is essential.
- Experience using 2d and 3d CAD software at different scales, GIS would be beneficial but not essential.
- Experiences of communication with clients. Participate in project management, can report/present the work results to client with strong influence.
