Department Manager
Location: Urban Outfitters, Unit MS6, Cranbourne Street, Brighton, BN1 2RG, United Kingdom
About the Role
The Department Manager at Urban Outfitters will play a pivotal role in assisting store operations, driving profitability, and fostering a culturally rich, creative, and customer-centric retail environment. You’ll be responsible for managing teams, ensuring excellence in service, and aligning daily activities with the store’s long-term strategic goals. As a key leadership figure, you’ll guide team members, uphold Urban Outfitters’ standards, and embody the “Peers Teaching Peers” philosophy to inspire growth and development.
Key Responsibilities
People & Team Development
- Oversee and lead a large team, ensuring day-to-day productivity and success.
- Recruit, train, and develop future managers to support operational growth.
- Act as a mentor for Department Managers, ensuring succession planning aligns with business objectives.
- Manage performance development, including:
- Performance appraisals
- Individual Development Plans (IDPs)
- Coaching and counselling
- Disciplinary procedures
- Champion positive role modelling and company standards across all team members.
Leadership & Communication
- Collaborate with Department Managers to host effective daily and department meetings.
- Inspire and lead by example, fostering a shared vision and cohesive store culture.
- Participate in the rollout of new training and operational initiatives.
- Maintain clear, impactful verbal and written communication with all stakeholders.
Managing the Retail Environment
- Lead by example in customer service, standards, and workflow efficiency.
- Train and coach staff on customer service excellence, product placement, and time management.
- Achieve Company-average mystery shop standards, reinforcing customer satisfaction.
- Uphold a positive store environment by setting clear goals and expectations.

Operations & Loss Prevention
- In the absence of the Store Manager, conduct regular walkthroughs with the Visual Merchandising Manager and Department Heads to provide actionable feedback.
- Ensure timely and accurate execution of all store-level operational procedures.
- Minimise stock loss through training in loss prevention practices.
- Maintain functional shipment processing to keep sales floors fully stocked.
- Demonstrate exceptional organisational skills, prioritising tasks effectively.
- Strict adherence to health & safety protocols to safeguard employees and customers.
Merchandising & Creative Direction
- Bridge the gap between management and creative teams to enhance the store’s aesthetic and operational flow.
- Equip team members with fashion trend knowledge to support creative merchandising.
- Oversee timely, clean, and professionally executed floor sets and displays.
- Maximise sales performance through strategic merchandise management (from stock receipt to sales process).
- Interpret store profitability reports to drive data-backed decisions.
- Stay informed on market trends, customer preferences, and external influences (e.g., media, local community).
- Optimise stock levels based on market insights and store environment.
Commercial Awareness
- Support the Store Manager in boosting retail profitability through analytical and innovative merchandising.
- Encourage team members to utilise company reports to respond to marketplace trends.
- Exceed store targets by leveraging entrepreneurial insights and proactive market engagement.
Requirements
Experience & Skills
- Proven experience in retail management, particularly in a fast-paced, high-volume fashion environment.
- Strong culture of commitment to our VIBE (values, individuality, boldness, expression) and service excellence.
- Ability to drive measurable results in sales, payroll, and stock loss metrics.
- Track record of mentoring and developing Department Managers.
- Problem-solving mindset—ability to identify issues in scheduling, organisation, and back-of-house operations and propose creative solutions.
- Deep appreciation of Urban Outfitters’ culture and its appeal to local markets.
