Utility Arborist
Chief Arborist – Vegetation Management (Overtime & Standby Pay Included) | SSEN Distribution
Location
Oban
Salary: £29,504 - £34,757 per annum, plus:
- Guaranteed overtime pay up to £4,442 annually
- Standby payments up to £3,820 annually (total extra potential: £8,262 subject to qualifications)
- 37-hour working week
- Full PPE and tools provided
- Company vehicle access

About the Role
SSEN Distribution powers 3.9 million UK homes and businesses with a network maintained by 4,200+ skilled engineers and experts. This role involves skilled tree cutting and storm response coordination to ensure grid safety and reliability.
As Overview: The Arborist focuses on clearing vegetation and trees near overhead distribution networks, working year-round to prevent power cuts and supporting storm response efforts. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Assessing and planning tree cutting and vegetation management works near power infrastructure
- Conducting safe, efficient cutting operations using chainsaws and other tools
- Supporting storm response teams by rapidly clearing vegetation causing outages
- Maintaining high safety and environmental standards throughout operations

Key Responsibilities
- Lead or contribute to cyclical tree cutting operations in high-risk areas
- Work with a skilled team to evaluate sites and execute cutting activities
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols, including working near power lines
- Flex and adapt to changing weather conditions and operational demands, including travel away from home
- Actively support storm recovery efforts when required
Requirements
Applicants should demonstrate:
- Previous experience in tree cutting, forestry, or arboriculture (or similar with relevant NPTC qualifications)
- Qualifications including NPTC UA (e.g., UK or European WOMA)
- Practical experience with chainsaws and vegetation removal techniques
- High regard for safety – ability to adhere to procedures around working near power lines
- Driving licence (UK)—mandatory for travel requirements
