VAT Director – Future Head of VAT
London | Top 30 Accountancy & Advisory Firm
A highly respected and ambitious London accountancy and advisory firm is seeking an exceptional VAT specialist to lead its VAT service line and play a pivotal role in the next phase of the firm’s growth.
This is a genuine leadership opportunity for an experienced VAT Director, Associate Director or ambitious Senior Manager looking to step into a highly visible role with a clear and direct pathway to Partnership.
The Opportunity
This is far more than a traditional VAT role. As VAT Director, you will:
- Lead an established and well-regarded VAT practice while shaping its future.
- Take ownership of developing the service line, growing client relationships, mentoring the team, and driving business development.
- Work directly with the Head of Tax to deliver the firm’s ambitious growth plans.
The role offers an excellent balance of strategic leadership, technical advisory work, and commercial responsibility. With an inherited portfolio and referral network, you’ll have the platform to build both the practice and your own market profile.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the firm’s VAT service line across advisory and compliance.
- Act as the firm’s lead VAT specialist and trusted adviser to clients and colleagues.
- Develop and implement the strategic growth plan for the VAT practice.
- Build and maintain long-term relationships with existing clients while identifying and securing new business opportunities.
- Deliver high-quality VAT advisory work across a broad range of sectors.
- Collaborate with Corporate Tax, Private Client, Audit, Accounts, and Business Advisory teams to maximise cross-selling opportunities.
- Mentor, develop, and inspire the VAT team, supporting recruitment and succession planning.
- Represent the firm externally through networking, marketing, and thought leadership.
- Work closely with the Head of Tax and Partnership on the wider strategy of the tax practice.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
