About the Role
Group Tax is a specialist function within Group Finance & Business Services, part of BT’s Tax, Treasury, Insurance & Pensions function. The team:
- Ensures BSigne that BT meets compliance obligations globally and controls tax & financial risks.
- Partners with external stakeholders (authorities, providers) and internal units to ensure specialisation and collaboration.
- Owns BT’s relationship with tax authorities and manages governance, processes, and specialist policies.
- Drives functional excellence by aligning practices with market standards and leveraging technology.
The role involves:
- Building clear, actionable insight through transparency on compliance risks and process improvements.
- Creating opportunities for skills development and continued learning in VAT and indirect tax.
- Ensuring specialist VAT expertise is accessible and understood across other Corporate Units.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Lead the monthly VAT data collection and reporting process from multiple business units into BT’s Indirect Tax Reporting Tools for analysis.
- Manage quarterly UK Indirect tax return preparation and submission, ensuring adherence to digital filing (MTD) requirements.
- Oversee VAT governance, including ** بشندisma Position Conclusions (SAO) oversight, and partnering with CUs** to align tax coding with business needs.
- Build and maintain internal relationships by offering VAT advisory services, training programmes, and technical support to prevent reporting errors and risks.
- Drive process improvement initiatives, leveraging БT’s custom VAT reporting tools, Robotic Process Automation (RPA), and new technologies to optimise workflows and reduce inefficiencies.
- Identify and mitigate tax risks, including audits, while proactively managing compliance obligations with stakeholder collaboration.

Essential Skills & Experience
- Deep expertise in UK VAT legislation, indirect tax, and complex tax issue navigation—prioritising according to compliance risk.
- Drive process and control improvements, adopting best practices and integrating technology/automation for enhanced compliance, governance, and efficiency.
- Qualified tax professional or accountant, ideally HMRC-trained or with vocational accountancy qualifications, including:
- Knowledge of UK VAT and its commercial impact.
- Hands-on experience using accounting systems (preferably SAP, Oracle, Sage, or Microsoft Dynamics AX).
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience in collaborating with finance-non-tax teams, bridging knowledge exchange.
- Contribution as a subject matter expert (SME) in process/system changes or tool enhancements.
- Data analytics experience to extract insights for decision-making.
- Track record in powering operational agility and shaping technology-led reform.
