The Nelson Trust is a charity dedicated to supporting women with complex needs, helping them make positive changes and live safer, more independent lives.
We are seeking a compassionate and motivated VAWG (Violence Against Women and Girls) Keyworker to join our Women’s Community Services team in Somerset.
This role focuses on delivering trauma-informed, gender-responsive support to women experiencing domestic abuse and/or sexual violence, often alongside multiple and complex needs. You will play a vital role in providing tailored support, advocacy and outreach to engage women who may struggle to access services.
Key Details
- Salary: £27,000 – £28,500 per annum (pro rata)
- Hours: 28 hours per week, 4 days (flexibility required)
- Location: Bridgwater Women’s Centre
- Pension: Auto-enrolment (6% employer contribution)
About The Role
What Will You Do?
Your primary responsibility will be to provide one-to-one and outreach support to women experiencing domestic abuse and sexual violence. Key responsibilities include:
- Providing person-centred support to women facing trauma-related challenges
- Managing a caseload of women, including:
- Conducting needs assessments
- Undertaking risk management
- Developing support plans
- Delivering trauma-informed outreach, engaging women who may find accessing services difficult
- Collaborating with partner agencies to coordinate advocacy and referrals
- Representing clients’ needs in:
- Multi-agency risk assessment conferences (MARAC)
- Other multi-disciplinary team meetings
- Facilitating group work sessions, including:
- Healthy relationships workshops
- Recovery-focused support
- Supporting women through:
- The criminal justice process (if required)
- Safety planning and crisis intervention
- Maintaining accurate client records and contributing to monitoring and reporting

Requirements
To be considered for this role, the following criteria will be assessed:
- A full UK driving licence (travel across Somerset is often required)
- 2+ years of experience working with women who have complex, multiple needs (including trauma-related background)
- Categorical knowledge of:
- Effects of domestic abuse
- Impacts of sexual violence
- Gender-specific support approaches
- Experience in:
- Conducting needs assessments
- Assessing and managing risk
- Developing individualised support plans
- Ability to:
- Engage effectively and build rapid trust with difficult-to-reach women
- Manage diverse caseloads and respond to crisis situations
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with:
- Excellent listening and advocacy capabilities
- Ability to navigate highly sensitive and traumatic discussions
- Good IT and administrative skills, including:
- Accurate and confidential record-keeping
- Understanding of standard safeguarding and data protection guidelines
