Panel Beater Apprenticeship

FMG Repair Services (FMGRS) are looking for a motivated, detail-focused Panel Technician to join their busy workshop in Durham, DH1 2RS– and no, you don’t need years of experience to get started.

What you'll do at work
As a Panel Beater Apprentice, you'll learn the skills needed to repair and restore damaged vehicle bodywork to manufacturer standards while working towards a nationally recognised qualification.
You'll gain hands-on experience in a busy bodyshop, supported by an experienced mentor who will guide your development throughout your apprenticeship. Alongside your workplace training, you'll attend college and complete off-the-job learning to build the technical knowledge and practical skills needed for a successful career in the automotive repair industry.
As part of your apprenticeship, you will:
- Attend all college sessions and training courses as required
- Complete coursework and assessments on time as part of your apprenticeship programme
- Learn how to inspect and assess vehicle damage
- Remove and replace non-structural body panels
- Assist with repairing or replacing damaged vehicle panels using approved repair techniques
- Remove, refit and align body panels, doors, bumpers and other vehicle components
- Remove and reinstall mechanical, electrical and trim components where required
- Carry out cosmetic panel alignment to manufacturer standards
- Learn how to identify and report faults, including basic electrical issues
- Follow health and safety procedures and use bodyshop equipment safely
- Develop your technical skills under the supervision of experienced technicians while delivering high-quality repairs

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Ability to undertake appropriate job preparation prior to commencing repair, including safety precautions, panel preparation and body measurements.
- Ability to identify the material used in the construction to enable the correct joining techniques and manufacturer specifications to be adhered to.
- Ability to interpret relevant technical data and methods to make sure that any joints are in line with vehicle manufacturer specification and the vehicle/body panels are aligned correctly.
- Ability to identify and understand the correct joining technology, e.g. when to use resistance spot welding or mig brazing or bonding.
- Ability to remove, repair and replace vehicle body panels and components of the vehicle safely and efficiently.
- Ability to identify and operate the correct repair tools, equipment and devices used in the process, panel pulling systems, jig and alignment tools, spot welders, brazing tools.
- Ability to identify and communicate supplementary damage such as panels that were deemed to be reparable but once worked on were found to be beyond repair along with damage that could not be established on original inspection.
- Ability to detect and rectify faults within a vehicles structure that’s integral to its safety.
Training schedule
This is a Vehicle Damage Panel Apprenticeship programme, delivered by Inspiro Learning (formerly Remit Training).
- Awarding Body: Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI)
- Training is delivered in the workplace and on block release at the Inspiro Automotive Academy in Doncaster. This means you will be required to stay in a hotel for 12 separate weeks (Mon – Fri) over the duration of the programme, which equals 4 weeks per year. All associated costs for training are met by the employer and there will be no cost to you.
- You will also be assigned a dedicated Development Coach who will visit you every 4-6 weeks either in the workplace or remotely via Microsoft Teams, giving 1-2-1 advice and guidance to help you achieve the following IMI qualifications:

Essential qualifications
- GCSE in:
- Maths (grade 4/C)
- English (grade 4/C)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
