Vehicle Maintenance Team Leader
Team Leader in Fleet Services (Vehicle Workshops)
Purpose of the Role The purpose of vehicle workshops is to ensure that vehicles are safe, legal, and undergo minimised downtime.
About the Role
As Team Leader in Fleet Services, this position supports a specialist technical area with diverse responsibilities. You will:
- Manage day-to-day line management of Vehicle Technicians, including workload allocation and prioritisation.
- Provide specialist technical support to service users and external third parties.
- Focus on the ongoing roadworthiness and maintenance of all council vehicles, collaborating with Fleet Services and Dorset Council staff across functions.
- Oversee nearly 200 large goods vehicles under Operator Licensing, ensuring DVSA compliance with regulatory standards and enforcement requirements.
This is a highly regulated, legislated, and specialist service, requiring technical expertise, organisational instincts, and composure under pressure.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
You will be accountable for the following responsibilities:
- Ensure vehicle safety and legality
- Supervise and allocate work to Vehicle Technicians
- Conduct preventative maintenance and defect repairs
- Act as the first point of contact for customers and services collecting/witnessing vehicles
- "Sign off" safety inspection sheets (legal documents)
- Maintain workshop safety, including updating risk assessments and ensuring health and safety compliance
- Liaise with Technical Officers across different fleet offices
- Order, receive, and manage stock accountability for parts and inventory
- Keep the workshop clean, tidy, and safe
