Vehicle Technician / Mechanic

Vehicle Technician / Mechanic

Reports to: Foreperson

Responsible for: Up to 5 staff (including semi-skilled staff, apprentices, or staff delegated under supervision)

About the Role

To service, maintain, and repair all types of motor vehicles, mechanical handling equipment, and mobile plant/equipment in a safe, efficient, and economical manner. Work independently to high standards, ensuring consistent quality while meeting manageable time targets.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Tasks

  • Inspect and assess vehicle/equipment condition, roadworthiness, and safety through functional testing and diagnostic techniques.
  • Perform servicing, maintenance, repairs, and adjustments on vehicles, equipment, and components using appropriate tools, adhering to manufacturer and health & safety guidelines.
  • Follow technical standards and legislation to ensure all work meets high-quality criteria.
  • Triage breakdowns or immobilised equipment, employing safe procedures to prevent additional vehicle damage, personal injury, or public hazard.
  • Manufacture simple components using hand tools/machinery, with precision and efficiency.
  • Conduct electrical, IT, fabrication, panel (aluminium/fibreglass) repairs, and welding tasks as required.
  • Apply vehicle maintenance policies to optimise equipment availability and reduce costs.
  • Apply diagnostic techniques to identify malfunctions and recommend improvements or modifications for enhanced safety and reliability.

Supervisory Duties

  • Supervise, train, and instruct semi-skilled staff, apprentices, and other mechanics as needed.
  • Attend mandatory training courses on vehicles, equipment, safety, or industry developments.
  • Maintain safe working practices, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) use and tidiness.

Business & Legal Compliance

  • Comply with all health, safety, and legal regulations (e.g., Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978, vehicle legislation).
  • Meet vehicle availability targets set by management.
  • Undertake bus driving duties as required.
  • Perform additional duties relevant to the role, within reasonable scope.

Performance Evaluation Criteria

  • Adherence to PCT for Motor Trade Employees in Transport Depots.
  • Completion of all tasks within specified timeframes to meet productivity standards.
  • Consistency of high-standard workmanship and organisation.
  • Proactive technical problem-solving.
  • Safe breakdown handling and prevention of further vehicle/public damage.
  • Deep understanding of legal obligations and vehicle legislation.
  • Effective instruction and transfer of technical knowledge to trainees.

Reporting Structure

  • Operate within the work schedule determined by the Workshop Foreperson.
  • Accurate timekeeping in line with workshop procedures.
  • Full compliance with documentation and record-keeping, including job costing systems.

The role may reflect competency guidelines but allows flexibility based on performance and need. In compliance with NI Equality Act 1998, the position upholds equality, good relations, and accessibility.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria (Shortlisted via Application Form)

Experience

  • NVQ Level 3 Motor Vehicle or equivalent
  • Full category B (car) driving licence currently held
  • Three years’ experience in maintaining a range of vehicles, plant, and machinery
  • hands-on experience with vehicle electrical systems and diagnostic software

  • Commitment to job-related training and certification to meet specifications. Note: Applicant may be requested to acquire a full category D (large vehicle) licence if necessary.

  • Strong English for both communicating and following instruction.
