Vessel Engineer
Location: Kyle of Lochalsh, IV40 8AJ
Salary: Competitive salary plus excellent benefits
Schedule: Perm/FT – 6 weeks on / 3 weeks off rota
About the Role
For applicants who live further than 80 miles away from Kyle of Lochalsh, Serco will pay a maximum of 0.45p per mile for travel to and from base.

As a Vessel Engineer in our Serco Maritime Services team, you’ll take ownership of the safe operation and maintenance of critical onboard systems, helping deliver trusted maritime support that makes a real difference.
Working on the Raasay Ranges at BUTEC, you’ll play a vital role in supporting operations that contribute to national and global maritime capability. Your work will help ensure vessels operate safely, efficiently, and reliably – supporting missions that have a positive impact and require the very highest standards.
What you’ll do as a Vessel Engineer
- Ensure safe and efficient operation of propulsion, auxiliary and deck machinery, electrical systems, and onboard equipment
- Work closely with the Master to optimise performance, efficiency, and reliability of all machinery
- Oversee planned maintenance, emergency repairs, and contractor work to maintain vessel readiness
- Monitor fuel, lubricants, and water usage, maintaining accurate daily records
- Supervise bunkering operations and manage fuel, ballast, and water transfers
- Maintain compliance with safety, environmental, and pollution prevention regulations
- Keep detailed records, inventories, and reports in line with company requirements
- Support safe operations by being on standby during critical manoeuvres and port activities

Does this sound like you?
You’ll be a great fit for this role if you have:
- Certificate of Competence as Second Marine Engineer Officer (SMEO) or above
- Valid STCW certification including safety, firefighting, and survival training
- Unrestricted ENG1 medical certificate and valid passport
- Ability to obtain Security Clearance (SC)
- A methodical, organised approach with strong attention to detail
