About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Veterinary Advisor to join our Centre for International Trade (CIT) team as part of the International Veterinary Team (IVT).

You’ll lead, advise, and manage trade-related activities, working alongside partners in government, industry, and global organisations.


Responsibilities

As Veterinary Advisor for International Trade, you will:

  • Lead and manage the International Veterinary Team (IVT), providing both strategic direction and hands-on leadership
    • Support performance, talent development, and people management to ensure a consistent, high-quality service delivery

  • Provide expert veterinary advice to internal and external stakeholders, including the APHA leadership, Defra policy teams, and the Chief Veterinary Officer

    • Develop and implement trade policies, ensuring advice is evidence-based, practical, and aligned with organisational priorities
  • Shape and deliver border control and trade policies in collaboration with Border Control teams, addressing UK and international challenges

  • Promote a collaborative and one-team culture by encouraging knowledge-sharing, cross-training, and best practice

    • Work with senior leaders to enhance operational efficiency, resilience, and value for money
  • Oversee quality assurance of APHA certification work, ensuring accurate and consistent advice for traders

    • Co-lead the Border Control Knowledge Forum, servicing aligned trade activity against policy and performance expectations
  • Play a critical role in biosecurity and crisis response, including disease outbreak planning and recovery

    • Support Defra in balancing trade facilitation with national biosecurity and animal health protections
  • Represent APHA at stakeholder engagement events, ensuring strong external relationships and translating insights back into decision-making


Requirements

You will be essential to the role if you demonstrate:

  • Strong ability to manage performance, coach teams, and deliver continuous improvement
  • Effective resource and organisational management with clear prioritisation in complex settings
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication, alongside the authority to represent APHA
  • Expertise in auditable systems, quality assurance, and record-keeping standards

Qualifications & Professional Memberships

  • A veterinary degree with eligibility to practice as a Member or Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS or FCCVS)
  • Current membership or Fellowship status with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons

Alongside a base salary of £56,375, we contribute £16,331 towards your membership of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
