About Our Team

Based in London, our Sector & Thematics equity team—founded in 1988—specializes in natural resources and thematic equity strategies, managing US$37 billion in assets across:

  • Mining & gold
  • Agriculture
  • Energy & new energy

Key aspects of the team:

  • 18+ members with 100+ years of combined investment experience
  • Two specialist pods:
    • Materials (mining/gold, agriculture)
    • Energy / Energy Transition
  • 11 portfolio managers and analysts, with five covering mining/gold and four in energy
  • Portfolio managers drive fundamental research + portfolio management, supported by analysts (including four with technical/industry backgrounds for expertise in areas like geology, project quality, capital costs, and commodity cycles).

The team benefits from dedicated resources, including:

  • 9 product strategists (client relations, investment comms)
  • Operations support (portfolio management, trading, risk oversight)

About This Role

We’re seeking a Research Analyst to coverageuring the mining and gold sector within the Materials pod. This role focuses on:

  • Generating high-conviction investment ideas aligned with portfolio strategy
  • Developing differentiated views rooted in technical expertise + rigorous analysis
  • Collaborating in a debate-driven, high-performing environment

Key Responsibilities

  • Research Execution:

    • Own end-to-end fundamental research (company analysis, valuation, investment theses).
    • Build robust financial models with clear, defensible assumptions.
    • Identify key value drivers, risks, and inflection points to shape sector views.
  • Investment Implementation:

    • Partner with portfolio managers on position sizing, timing, and portfolio construction.
    • Monitor holdings with discipline and update views as market conditions evolve.
  • Strategic Contribution:

    • Articulate investment arguments logically in team discussions.
    • Shape sector-level trends and inform broader investment strategy.
  • Emerging Tools:

    • Leverage AI tools to enhance commodity/company analysis and decision-making.

Knowledge & Experience

Domain & Technical Expertise

  • Academic background: Geology or mining engineering required.
  • Industry experience preferred: A mix of mining/securities experience (public/private equity) ideal.

Investment Judgment

  • Proven ability to form independent, evidence-based views in complex environments.
  • Track record (or potential) for originating high-impact investment ideas across market caps.

Analytical rigor

  • Strong academic foundation + skills in distilling complexity to core value drivers.
  • Ability to structure arguments and test hypotheses decisively.

Experience Requirements

  • 5–12 years relevant experience.
  • CFA (or equivalent) is advantageous.
