Harris Academy Beckenham is a happy, energetic, and inclusive 11–18 academy renowned as one of the highest-performing schools in Bromley. We retained our ’Outstanding’ judgement in May 2023 following a previous ’Outstanding’ inspection in June 2017—one of just 52 schools in the country to retain this accolade.

With 1,500 applicants competing for 180 places each year, we deliver outstanding academic achievement, discipline, and behaviour, consistently exceeding national averages. ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY

We seek an outstanding individual to join us as Vice Principal—a role that mirrors that of the Principal, with full support and aspiration towards Principalship.


MAIN AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

(Responsibilities negotiable; see below for broader expectations)

  • Strategic Leadership & Data Management

    • Oversee assessment, target-setting, and reporting (achievement data to governors and external bodies).
    • Collaborate with the Principal to set challenging, whole-academy targets.
  • Teaching, Learning & Assessment

    • Lead Professional Learning opportunities to ensure classroom excellence and student outcomes.
    • Maintain high standards in teaching quality and pedagogical rigor.
  • Behaviour & Inclusion

    • Ensure all student needs are met—inside and beyond the classroom.

As a member of the Academy Leadership Group, you will also:

  • Collaborate to plan, refine, and implement shared vision and strategy.
  • Play a key role in policy formulation, monitoring, and review.
  • Set subject targets, ensure rigorous tracking, and guarantee high-impact interventions.
  • Monitor budgets, faculty performance, and department-specific targets.
  • Develop staff, deliver INSET, and appoint new hires.
  • Represent the school through assemblies, public engagements, and incident responses.
  • Contribute to whole-school responses, including disciplinary management.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We seek candidates with:

  • QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) and a good undergraduate degree.
  • At least 3 years’ experience at senior leadership level, including one as a Deputy/Vice Principal.
  • Proven subject leadership (raising achievement across two or more key stages).
  • Experience in professional development, including high-quality INSET delivery.
  • Leadership of teams/individuals, ensuring performance excellence.
  • Monitoring, evaluation, and review experience (academic and operational).
  • Strong ICT proficiency and innovation in curriculum/assessment tech.
  • Curriculum innovation—most recent within the past 2–3 years.
  • Experience presenting to senior stakeholders (e.g., governors, external bodies).
  • Cross-curricular academic strategies (e.g., Language, Literacy, Numeracy for improvement).
  • Implementation of innovative teaching/learning strategies nationally.
  • Whole-school change management with measurable success.
  • Experience in coaching staff/subject leaders for professional growth.
