We are seeking to recruit a pool of Visiting Lecturers who can contribute to our Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes across our academic Schools.

The Department of Architecture and the Built Environment delivers a practice-led portfolio shaped by the needs of the contemporary architecture, construction, design and development sectors. Formed through the convergence of the Birmingham School of Architecture and Design and the College of the Built Environment, the Department represents more than a structural change—it is a bold re-founding of architectural and built environment education.
Our Vision
Our vision is to create a Place of Praxis, where spatial, technical and environmental design are understood as forms of agency. We believe the built environment is never neutral: every drawing, detail, material choice, policy and proposal has ethical, social and environmental consequences. Through teaching that connects research, professional practice and critical inquiry, we encourage students to see design as an instrument for positive social and environmental transformation.

Students learn in specialist studio spaces, digital design environments and technical workshops, supported by industry-standard software, modelling technologies and facilities across Millennium Point and our city-centre campus. Strong partnerships with architectural practices, construction firms, surveying consultancies and professional bodies ensure our teaching reflects contemporary industry expectations, evolving regulatory frameworks and sustainable design priorities.
We welcome Visiting Lecturers who can bring current professional expertise, sector insight and practice-informed teaching to our programmes. As part of a forward-looking academic community, you will contribute to teaching that combines technical excellence with critical design thinking, preparing students to engage ethically, creatively and confidently with the evolving built environment professions.

- Current professional expertise and experience relevant to your discipline.
- The ability to deliver engaging, practice-informed teaching that connects academic learning with contemporary professional practice.
- A commitment to fostering intellectually challenging, inclusive and supportive learning environments.
- Considered and fair student support, recognising that academic quality is strengthened by a respectful, supportive and professional studio culture.
- An understanding of the ethical, social and environmental responsibilities of the built environment professions and a commitment to preparing students for thoughtful, responsible practice.

Candidates must upload a current CV and provide two supporting statements. It is essential that applicants address the following:

By applying to this vacancy, you will be joining our Visiting Lecturer recruitment pool. Visiting Lecturer roles are part-time, fixed-term positions, with hours agreed between you and the academic schools as required. Posts are paid hourly, with rates varying according to the nature of the work.
When teaching opportunities arise that match your skills and experience, the academic schools will contact you directly to discuss them. Please note that contact is not guaranteed.
The recruitment pool is refreshed annually. You will be invited to resubmit your details if you wish to remain in the pool for the following year. If you do not respond, your information will be deleted in line with our Data Protection Policy.
