Job Title: VMU Technician (Field-Based)
📍 Location
- Primary: Greenford, London (North West area)
- Work is conducted on-site at customer locations, with the potential for travel between VMU depots for coverage during leave or additional support.
🔧 About the Role
As a VMU Technician, you’ll be part of a dedicated team responsible for the service, maintenance, and repair of a contract customer’s fleet. You’ll report into the Fleet Management Division (FMD) under the guidance of the VMU Manager. This role demands flexibility, as you may occasionally be assigned to other VMU depots—whether for operational support or unforeseen needs.
🔧 Key Responsibilities
Comprehensive Vehicle Maintenance & Repairs
- Conduct thorough preventative maintenance and repairs, adhering to strict standards.
- Diagnose vehicle faults quickly, ensuring correct repairs are made and warranty claims comply with set terms.

Ensuring Service Excellence
- Deliver prompt, professional, and proactive responses to VMU telephone enquiries and customer issues.
- Provide exceptional hospitality by monitoring vehicle status (on/off-road) and completing detailed shift handovers.
Compliance & Reporting
- Maintain accurate and timely records in the form of:
- Job cards
- Service sheets
- Timesheets
- Any other relevant documentation.
- Conduct diagnostic analysis where required.
- Adhere to all Company, Industry & Legal Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) standards, including:
- Reporting accidents, risks, and near misses immediately.
- Ensuring uniform compliance, proper personal protective equipment (PPE) use, and safe systems of work.
- Reporting defective PPE promptly.
Customer & Team Relations
- Build rapid, trust-based relationships with both internal and external customers.
- Contribute to a proactive and supportive work culture.
- Ensure high standards of housekeeping are maintained at all times.
Continuous Improvement & Skill Development
- Expand your skillset through continuous training, aiming for multi-skilling in both mechanical and electrical disciplines.
- Identify opportunities for process and operational enhancements within VMU.
Core Expectations
- Operate efficiently to meet technical, financial, and cultural objectives.
- Deliver repairs of the highest standard for both mechanical and electrical faults.
- Defend safety protocols inside the workshop and during mobile operations.

✔️ What You’ll Bring
📜 Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Proven mechanical or refrigeration background.
- Ability to work with minimal day-to-day supervision.
- Full motor vehicle driving license (essential for field-based travel).
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Computer literacy to manage documentation and records.
🌟 Flexibility Requirements
- Willingness to travel across locations as needed, including COVID-19 health/safety precautions.
🎓 Desirable Qualifications & Skills
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in Mathematics and English (Grade C/4 or above preferred).
- F-Gas 2079 Certificate (preferred for refrigeration experience).
- Prior work in a mechanical or cold chain environment.
- Ability to read wiring diagrams and interpret technical manuals.
