Vocational Tutor (Digital Functional Skills & Employability) – 3 Durham Sites

Catch22 College comprises 7 sites across the UK, delivering academic and vocational training programmes for young people aged 16+ who are not suited to a mainstream school setting.

Our Peterlee, Bishop Auckland, and Stanley sites (based in Durham) provide students with a highly supportive environment, where they can:

This role spans all three Durham-based Campuses:

  • 1 day at Stanley
  • 2 days at Peterlee
  • 1 day at Bishop Auckland
  • 1 planning day (to be arranged flexibly, with the option to work from the closest base to the candidate)

We are an **accredited centre for City & Guilds and NCFE Edexcel.


Job Description

As a Vocational Tutor, you will play a vital role in supporting young people (typically 16–19 years old, up to 24 with an EHCP) by:

  • Teaching Digital Functional Skills and Employability Skills
  • Mentoring learners in post-16 education and career pathways
  • Working closely with the Lead Teaching team, who drive quality, set KPIs, and uphold a culture of continuous improvement.

Key support provided: ✔ Access to teaching resources from City & Guilds and NCFE Edexcel ✔ Guidance and collaboration with experienced Lead Teachers


Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Delivery

  • Deliver Digital Functional Skills and Customer Service training
  • Create and implement schemes of work for cohesive service delivery
  • Develop and innovate lesson plans, including group activities and targeted learning
  • Follow the official curriculum, setting and monitoring student progress against personalised objectives
  • Provide 1:1 support where learners need individualised assistance

Requirements & Qualifications

Mandatory Criteria

✅ Professional Qualification – A teaching qualification equivalent to:

  • Degree
  • PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education)
  • Cert Ed (Certificate of Education)

Or directly relevant vocational or industry experience (where formal teaching qualifications are not held).

✅ Relevant Teaching Experience

  • Minimum 2+ years of experience in an alternative provision (AP) setting
  • Knowledge and expertise in supporting:
    • EAL (English as an additional language)
    • SEN (Special Educational Needs) and speech/language difficulties
    • Learners with complex emotional, behavioural, or social needs

✅ Experience with Hard-to-Reach Learners

  • Engage with disengaged youth aged 14–19
  • Foster positive motivation in school-challenged or daoist young people

✅ Outstanding Behaviour Management

  • High expectations for learner conduct
  • Proven strategies for:
    • De-escalation
    • Redirection
    • Managing challenging behaviour
    • Teaching self-regulation and mutual respect

✅ Compliance Knowledge

  • Familiarity with:
    • Statutory equal opportunities and anti-discrimination laws
    • Health and safety regulations
    • SEND provisions and safeguarding procedures
    • Child protection and safeguarding policies

Additional Information

Location & Contract

  • Durham Sites: Peterlee, Bishop Auckland, Stanley (cross-site rotation)
  • Working Days:
    • 1x day at Stanley
    • 2x days at Peterlee
    • 1x day at Bishop Auckland
    • 1x planning day per week (flexible scheduling via closest site)
  • Contract Type: Permanent, Term-Time (41 weeks/year)
  • Hours: Full-time – 37 hours/week

Salary (Pro-Rata)

  • £23,807.26 – £33,725.36 (based on £26,097–£36,969 FTE)

Travel & Qualifications

✅ Mandatory full and valid UK driving licence required ✅ Must hold a current car (essential due to testying between sites)

Safeguarding & Recruitment

  • This role involves working with vulnerable young people, so:
    • Enhanced DBS check is mandatory
    • Child protection safeguarding awareness must be demonstrated
    • Approval for post is subject to successful background screening
