Company Description
Community Computers is a social initiative that refurbishes donated technology and offers it back into the community at low cost and for free, helping to reduce digital exclusion. The organization provides practical work experience, training, and pathways to employment for individuals who have been out of work long term.
Operating under Renewal North West, a registered charity (number 1145056), Community Computers combines environmental sustainability with community support. Volunteers contribute to meaningful local impact by extending the life of IT equipment and supporting residents, charities, and community groups with affordable access to technology.
Role Description
The Volunteer PC Refurb Technician role is a part-time, on-site position based in Stockport. Day-to-day tasks include:
- Inspecting and testing desktop computers and related equipment
- Diagnosing hardware and software issues
- Performing repairs or upgrades such as replacing components and installing operating systems
- Preparing refurbished machines for reuse, including cleaning, installing basic software packages

Volunteers may also provide basic technical support and troubleshooting guidance to colleagues, help maintain an organized workspace and inventory of parts, and follow safety and data security procedures. This position offers hands-on experience in computer refurbishment while supporting the wider community.
Qualifications
- Ability to work with desktop computers, including basic hardware installation and configuration.
- Interest in IT, electronics, or computer refurbishment; any prior workshop or repair experience is beneficial.
- Willingness to learn, follow technical and safety guidelines, and work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Reliable attendance, good time management, and the ability to carry out tasks with care and attention to detail.
- No formal qualifications are required; training will be provided, but any relevant certifications or coursework in IT support or computer hardware are an advantage.

What we can offer
Community Computers is a small, warm, and friendly IT refurbishment project. We have a wealth of experience in installing, maintaining, and supporting IT systems and would love to share that with you. We provide hands-on practical training for common systems. You'll benefit from a low-pressure environment while having direct in-person support to help you learn and grow within IT support and refurbishment.
We provide reimbursement for reasonable travel costs.
A minimum of 7.5 hours a week commitment is required in order to complete initial and ongoing training.
