This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in establishing a new, two-year funded Volunteer Companion Service. As our Volunteer Services Officer, you’ll be instrumental in implementing the service from the ground up, building strong relationships, recruiting volunteers, and providing high-quality training, mentoring and ongoing support. You’ll also take the lead in promoting the service across hospital sites through local marketing and PR activity.
Marie Curie volunteers provide vital emotional and practical support to people in the last days and hours of life, as well as to those important to them. Working within St James’s Hospital and other Leeds Trust Hospitals, our End of Life Volunteers help enhance the care we offer to patients, families and carers at an incredibly important time.
In this role, you’ll manage referrals, carefully match volunteers to patients and families, and ensure volunteers feel confident, supported and valued in their work. Working alongside key stakeholders, you’ll design and deliver a comprehensive training and support programme to ensure our volunteers are fully prepared for their roles and able to make a meaningful difference.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
