Together, we’re establishing a new End of Life Care (SUPPORT) Volunteer Team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. This role will be pivotal in developing and sustaining compassionate volunteer support for dying patients and their loved ones. Every action aligns with our mission of delivering excellence in end-of-life care.
About the Role
A full-time Volunteer Services Officer (Permanent, 35 hrs/week) will:
- Coordinate & deliver a new two-year funded Volunteer Companion Service, implementing it from its inception.
- Recruit, train, mentor and support volunteers to provide emotional and practical support to patients and families at Leeds’ acute hospital sites.
- Promote the service via local marketing and PR activities.
- Manage referrals, match volunteers to care needs, and ensure assuming consistent quality, support, and efficacy.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to design a training & development programme.
Based at St James’s University Hospital, this role will predominantly operate during Mon–Fri office hours (on-site) with occasional site-based work.

Salary & Contract
- £28,274–£31,415 per annum (MCJES Grade D)
- Permanent, Full-time (35 hrs/week)
- Eligibility requires access to a private vehicle & full UK driving licence (for business travel).
- Contract start pending DBS clearance.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Developing & scaling a new volunteer service (initial 2-year funding).
- Recruiting & onboarding volunteers, with tailored training to prep for end-of-life care roles.
- Supervising & mentoring volunteers to build confidence and competence.
- Marketing & raising awareness of the service across Leeds Teaching Hospitals (press/promotional criteria).
- Handling referrals from palliative care teams, assigning volunteers as appropriate.
- Data management – analyzing trends to improve matching & service impact.
- Representing Marie Curie with professional integrity and our end-of-life care values.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
✔ Proven experience in service development, including relationship-building with internal/external stakeholders. ✔ Strong background in volunteer recruitment, training & support, particularly in healthcare or compassionate roles. ✔ Hands-on experience with patients or families navigating loss (familiarity with palliative/end-of-life care preferred). ✔ Ability to design interactive group training or mentorship programmes. ✔ Confidence using databases (e.g., CRM, Excel) for data collation and trend-spotting. ✔ Self-motivated approach to local PR and marketing initiatives.
