Volunteer Services Officer – Marie Curie & Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust

Marie Curie is partnering with Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust to establish a new End of Life Care (SUPPORT) volunteer service, offering compassionate support to dying patients and their loved ones.


Job Description

Role Purpose Join the Hospital Voluntary Services Team as a Volunteer Services Officer, supporting the implementation of a new Volunteer Companion Service—a two-year funded initiative at St James’s Hospital and across Leeds Teaching Hospitals. This role will shape the service from its foundation, ensuring volunteers receive comprehensive training, mentoring, and ongoing support, while working alongside the palliative care team to enhance patient and family care during life’s last days.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the pilot phase of a new SUPPORT Volunteer Companion Service, coordinating across St James’s Hospital and other Trust sites.
  • Recruit, mentor, and embed volunteer team members, including designing t tailored training programmes.
  • Match volunteers to patients/families, managing referrals and ensuring high-quality, compassionate support.
  • Build strong cross-departmental relationships to promote the service via marketing and PR initiatives.
  • Data management: Use databases to analyse trends and improve service delivery.
  • Provide practical and emotional support to staff and volunteers, fostering a thriving, inclusive environment.

Person Specification

  • Service delivery expertise: Proven ability to launch and develop new initiatives, including recruitment, training, and volunteer support.
  • Relationship-building: History of collaborating with teams and stakeholders, including in healthcare settings.
  • Marketing/Pr: Experience pitching services locally and managing public relations.
  • Compassionate care: Direct experience (as a volunteer or professional) in supporting patients/families during loss.
  • Database skills: Confident managing data collection, analysis, and reporting of trends.
  • Travel requirements:
    • Hold a full UK driving licence.
    • Access to a vehicle for business use.
    • Based at St James’s Hospital (excluding nights, weekends, or on-call).

Closing Details

  • Salary: £27,450 – £30,500 per annum (Grade D, MCJES).
  • Contract: Permanent, full-time (35 hours/week), Monday–Friday.
  • Location: St James's Hospital, Leeds.
  • Closing date: 17th July 2026.
