Background
Finchley Foodbank is a North London charity operating in East Finchley to provide food and other support for people experiencing food poverty in the London Borough of Barnet. We are open twice a week and serve around 200 households every week. We rely on donations from individuals, businesses, and organisations, as well as the support of our dedicated volunteers. We are looking for a new Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees. The role of Trustees is to oversee the governance of Finchley Foodbank, whilst the day-to-day activities are carried out by the Foodbank Management Group (FMG).
The Treasurer will need specific financial skills and experience to take on the role as well as participating in the general governance decisions made by the Trustees. The Treasurer will have financial experience to take the lead at Trustee level on reporting on financial matters to other Trustee members who meet quarterly in person at Finchley Foodbank (c.2 hours).
The position will also involve joining the FMG. This group oversees the running of the Foodbank and generally involves monthly meetings (c.2 hours). The day-to-day bookkeeping is undertaken by an external bookkeeping company which works closely with the Treasurer, preparing monthly management accounts and supporting the charity's financial administration. The Treasurer reviews the monthly accounts, oversees the charity's financial controls and banking arrangements, and reports regularly to the FMG on the financial health of the Foodbank.

Treasurer role
- Overseeing the preparation of the annual budget, financial forecasts, and monthly management accounts for the FMG and Trustees.
- Ensuring that the annual financial statements are prepared in accordance with the Charity SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice).
- Filing the annual Trustees Report; financial statements and Annual Return with the Charity Commission.
- Being available after month end to review accounts with the bookkeeper and schedule their distribution to the foodbank’s secretary for distribution.
- Overseeing bank account management and that appropriate systems for bookkeeping, payments, lodgements & petty cash are in place.
- Maintaining a Treasurer’s Manual.
- Ensure use of funds complies with conditions set by funding bodies.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
- Leading the development and review of the charity's reserves policy in conjunction with Trustees.
- Monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity.
- Lead on the appointment of and liaison with the independent examiner
- Keeping the Trustees informed about their financial duties and responsibilities.
- Review of Gift Aid claims to HMRC.
- Preparing online banking payments (including wages and HMRC) for approved invoices and expenditure (typically around 10 payments per month) and liaising with authorised bank signatories to ensure timely approval and release of payments.

What we are looking for
- A finance professional ideally a qualified accountant (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA or CIPFA) with substantial practical financial management experience. Experience of charity finance would also be an advantage.
- Clear communicator
- Be available and responsive. As a small charity, things sometimes ‘come up’ that require the Treasurer to advise, support or give consent to.
Time commitment
- Attending monthly FMG and quarterly Trustee meetings. Currently meetings are held in person at Finchley Foodbank
- Treasurer specific duties would require an additional commitment of 6-10 hours per month.
- The term of office is 3 years, renewable once.
- Attending subgroup meetings where appropriate e.g., ad hoc working groups
