VP Group Strategy

Vice President – Group Strategy at Barclays

Role Summary

As a Vice President in Barclays’ Group Strategy team, you will develop and challenge Group and business unit strategies, delivering measurable impact on strategic projects that drive value across the Firm. This role offers direct exposure to senior management, mentorship opportunities, and the chance to shape your career while influencing the Bank’s future direction.

You will lead high-impact projects shaping Barclays’ long-term strategy, including:

  • Growth strategy
  • Portfolio optimisation
  • Market entry initiatives
  • Capital allocation decisions

The role provides strategic influence at the highest decision-making level, enabling you to drive enterprise-wide transformation.


Accountabilities

Strategic Advisory

  • Partner with Group Executives to manage complex business challenges, offering independent, fact-based recommendations for critical decisions.
  • Serve as an objective advisory voice to senior stakeholders.

Enterprise-Wide Impact

  • Design strategies that optimise performance across business units while balancing short-term priorities with long-term growth objectives.
  • Align decisions with Barclays’ overall strategic goals and client/investor needs.

Problem Solving & Analysis

  • Break down ambiguous challenges, develop clear hypotheses, and apply advanced analytical techniques (financial modelling, market analysis) to generate actionable insights.

Market & Competitive Intelligence

  • Monitor industry trends, benchmark peers, and synthesise external insights to anticipate disruptions and identify new opportunities.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build trusted relationships with senior leaders across the bank, leveraging persuasive communication and compelling storytelling to foster consensus.

Leadership & Development

  • Mentor junior talent, cultivating a culture of excellence, innovation, and employee growth.

Vice President Expectations: Key Qualifications & Skills

  • Proven expertise in corporate strategy, management consulting, or investment banking, with a track record of delivering impact at scale.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills, capable of structuring complexity and proposing creative, innovative solutions.
  • Strong financial acumen, with proficiency in financial modelling and analysis.
  • Ability to influence senior stakeholders through clear communication and negotiation.
  • Collaborative leadership, thriving in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.

Role-Specific Contributions

Corporate Direction & Decision-Making

  • Provide independent, evidence-based advice to Group Executives, guiding strategic decisions and narrowing opportunities.
  • Develop strategic advisory frameworks to grow and optimise Barclays’ operations, using market research and financial analysis.
  • Partner with stakeholders to determine optimal strategic direction aligned with client and investor needs.

Financial & Transactional Expertise

  • Construct financial models to support transaction approvals, mergers, investments, and divestitures.
  • Analyse financial risks/impacts, propose tailored transaction structures, and ensure post-transaction integration.

Stakeholder & Client Collaboration

  • Maintain client relationships and proactively identify new growth opportunities.
  • Conduct competitive benchmarking through research, training, and industry conferences.

Leadership & Team Management

  • Team Leadership
    • Define roles, allocate budgets, and align policies/procedures with long-term business needs.
    • Drive performance discussions, ensure compliance with requirements, and scale operations.

    • Serve as a subject matter expert, guiding multi-year initiatives and cross-functional assignments.
