Wales Policy Officer
Based in the NEU Cymru Wales Office (Cardiff CF24 5PJ)
Part-time (24.5 hours per week), permanent
Commencing salary £58,983 per annum (to be paid pro-rata)
The National Education Union is a powerful force for change in education, representing 500,000 teachers, lecturers, support staff, and leaders. As we have recently completed an extensive staffing review, this is an exciting time to join us on our journey to becoming a more agile, strategic, and powerfully coordinated trade union – ready to meet the challenges of the future and drive lasting change in education.
We are currently seeking to appoint a Wales Policy Officer on a part-time basis to assist in the promotion of the Union’s policies in the Wales Government, the Wales media and through supporting campaigning across Wales.
Key Responsibilities:
- Have good knowledge and understanding of the education systems operating in Wales and in the UK and relevant legislation.
- Be able to link it with the priorities, issues and concerns affecting NEU members in Wales.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Write clearly and concisely and present arguments with clarity.
- Have a good understanding of the principles of organising in a trade union and knowledge and understanding of campaigning activity.

Requirements:
- Due to the nature of this role, there will be a requirement to travel to attend activities, conferences and meetings away from the normal place of work, and which may involve stays away from home. These could be locally within Wales or nationally.
- Prospective applicants are also advised that your normal place of work will be the NEU office specified in this advert and that the NEU operates ‘Blended Working Arrangements’ for office-based staff, which means you will typically need to be based in the designated NEU office for 3 to 4 days a week (based on a full-time contract), with the remaining days based at home, and subject to business needs.

Benefits:
- In addition to salary, we offer good conditions including 33 days’ annual leave plus Christmas closure days and a defined benefit pension scheme.
- Salary and benefits will be calculated pro-rata for part-time applicants.
