Walk-in Service Advance Clinical Practitioner – NHS Western Isles
Location: Ospadal Uibhist agus Bharraigh, Benbecula, Western Isles
Job Title & Band:
Walk-in Service Advance Clinical Practitioner | Band 7: £52,845 – £61,466 per annum (Plus Distant Island Allowance of £1,461 per annum)
Contract:
Full-time or part-time | Fixed-term until 31st March 2027
About the Role

A unique pioneering health service opportunity has arisen for an innovative and compassionate Advance Clinical Practitioner to work within the Western Isles Walk-in Service, designed to:
- Relieve pressure on local GP practices across the islands.
- Improve patient access to urgent care.
- Enhance Primary and Urgent Care resilience in rural settings.
This rural-proofed pilot model will deliver same-day urgent care for:
- Temporary residents and visitors across the Western Isles (onsite diagnostics at OUAB, Benbecula).
- Residents of North Uist, Benbecula, and South Uist (from November 2026), offering a walk-in alternative to attending their usual GP practice.
The Walk-in Service operates:
- Weekdays (9:00 AM – 5:30 PM)
- Via telephone, Near Me video consultations, and face-to-face appointments at the clinical hub.
- For out-of-area temporary residents, remote video/telephone appointments are provided.
The team includes GP, Primary Care Coordinators, and the Advance Clinical Practitioner, who will deliver clinical assessments and management of urgent presentations, including treatment planning and referrals where needed.

Key Responsibilities
- Conduct clinical assessments for urgent care cases, ensuring safe, effective, and patient-centred care.
- Develop and implement treatment plans as per medical guidelines.
- Refer patients appropriately to specialists or hospital services where necessary.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues (GPs, nurses, coordinators) to optimise healthcare delivery.
- Support the pilot service’s evolvement, providing insights into clinical workflow improvements.
- Participate in education and mentoring of junior clinical staff.
- Maintain accurate clinical records in line with NHS Scotland standards.
- Uphold confidentiality and data protection (GDPR/PVG compliance required).
Person Specification
Essential Criteria:
✔ Qualified as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP). ✔ Postgraduate certificate in ACP or equivalent advanced nursing qualification. ✔ Current professional registration with the Nurse and Midwifery Council (NMC) or other relevant UK authority. ✔ Experience in rural/remote healthcare settings (preferred but not strictly required). ✔ Ability to work collaboratively with healthcare teams across disciplines. ✔ Compliance with the NHS Scotland Code of Practice and PVG Scheme.
Desirable Criteria:
🔹 Previous urgent care or emergency medicine experience. 🔹 Experience with GP referral systems or primary care. 🔹 Understanding of island health challenges in Scotland. 🔹 Informatics/computer literacy for NHS Scotland GP tools (Central Registered System – CReS). 🔹 Commitment to NHS values: working together for patients.
