Job Opportunity at Northwick Park Hospital

James Ward at Northwick Park Hospital is looking for a dynamic and professional Ward Clerk to meet the administrative demands of our busy surgical colorectal ward. You will work as part of the multidisciplinary team.

Role Description

The role of the ward clerk is to assist in relieving the Nursing staff of as many non-midwifery/non-nursing duties as possible under the direct supervision of the Ward Manager and Matron.

  • Liaise with ward managers/team leaders, clerks, and data quality staff to ensure accurate data is maintained.
  • Provide general non-clinical advice to patients and their families - deal with face-to-face and telephone enquiries in a sympathetic, pleasant, and efficient manner, ensuring messages are relayed in an appropriate and timely manner, referring calls and enquiries to the ward Manager where appropriate.
  • Report any emergency or potential risk.
  • Liaise with medical records and other departments to locate patient case notes ensuring that information is current; are filed in good order, and that medical staff have access to all relevant information, including test results.
  • Ensure that any correspondence from the department (including patient discharge summaries) are appropriately addressed and sent in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure the ward bed state is up to date.
  • Manage faxing of information and documentation as required by the ward manager/team to ensure timely, effective communication to appropriate areas.
  • Make follow-up clinic appointments for patients being discharged from the ward.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and discussions on working practices, procedures, and policies for own area.
  • Promote and maintain good customer care.
  • May need to deal with patients with communication difficulties.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ensure patients' notes are kept locked away at all times.
