Our values of Kindness, Integrity, Teamwork and Equality form the foundation of everything that we do. We aim to be an exceptional provider of healthcare and ensure excellence for our patients and their families each and every time.
If you are enthusiastic, highly motivated and seeking to drive forward the provision of high-quality care within a general medical ward as a ward manager then this post is for you.
Oakdale Ward is a busy 30-bedded general medical ward, for patients with various and at times complex medical conditions and has a high number of admissions, transfers and discharges each day. The team works closely with all other members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure the patient is cared for in a holistic manner throughout their inpatient stay and that the patient is safely transferred or discharged at the earliest opportunity.
We are looking to recruit an experienced, highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to lead and develop the team. You will be a driver for providing high quality care for our patients, bringing innovative ideas for change and improvement.
You will need excellent communication skills and high clinical standards with a passion to make a difference for patients and staff alike. This is a demanding role that requires commitment and a positive approach towards change.
Responsibilities
- Provide overall leadership and management of the General Medicine Ward (Oakdale) ensuring delivery of safe, high quality, patient centered care.
- Maintain 24-hour accountability for clinical standards, patient safety, and the patient experience.
- Lead, manage, and develop the nursing and support workforce, ensuring appropriate staffing levels, skill mix, and safe rostering.
- Act as a visible clinical leader and role model, promoting professional standards and a positive ward culture.
- Oversee patient flow, including admissions, transfers, and discharges, to support effective capacity management and reduce length of stay within admissions.
- Monitor and manage the ward budget, including staffing expenditure, and ensure cost effective use of resources.
- Lead on quality assurance, including audits, CQC standards, and compliance with national and local policies.
- Analyse quality and performance data (e.g. incidents, complaints, falls, pressure ulcers), implementing improvement plans where required.
- Ensure robust clinical governance systems are in place, including risk management, incident reporting, and learning from events.
- Lead investigations into incidents, complaints, and safeguarding concerns, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
- Promote and ensure compliance with infection prevention and control standards.
- Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated, effective care delivery.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
