Waste Engineer – Historic Nuclear Site Decommissioning
Are you looking to make a real impact by shaping the decommissioning of a historic nuclear site? Do you enjoy a role where your decisions directly influence environmental outcomes for future generations?
We’re recruiting a motivated Waste Engineer to join our team, offering a challenging yet balanced four-day work week (Monday to Thursday).
About the Role
You’ll play a pivotal role in guiding decommissioning programmes through waste and transport legislation, advising on safe, compliant, and environmentally conscious waste handling. Responsibilities include developing and refining waste strategies, supporting radioactive and non-active waste movements, and providing technical support across the site.
Core areas of influence:
- Maintenance and management of technical databases and spreadsheets for waste tracking.
- Advisory on hazardous waste management, waste classification/coding, Duty of Care, and transport legislation.
- Technical guidance to project teams on radiological waste consignment and compliance.
- Promotion of continuous improvement in waste management practices.
- Stakeholder engagement with internal/external partners.

Key Responsibilities
- Develop and uphold technical databases and spreadsheets for waste governance.
- Provide expertise on radioactive waste management and non-active dangerous goods.
- Advise project teams on regulatory compliance and environmental protections.
- Support streamlined waste consignment processes for safe site clearance.
Who We’re Looking For

Essential qualifications & experience:
- Degree-equivalent HNC/HND in scientific, engineering, or environmental sciences.
- Proven expertise in nuclear waste management, including:
- Hands-on involvement in waste operations or inventory work.
- Understanding of legislative frameworks (radioactive and controlled waste).
- Familiarity with classification systems and hazardous materials regulations.

Technical & soft skills:
- Collaborative mindset, analytical problem-solving, and compliance-focused advice.
- Practical experience in decommissioning or similar industries.
- (Desirable) Experience with Dangerous Goods (ADR) consignment of Class 7 radioactive materials.

Requirements
- Eligibility to work in the UK and passport valid for security clearance.
- Experience verifying employment/education history (last 3–5 years).
