Location: Hampshire (with occasional county-wide travel required); eligibility: Full UK driving licence mandatory
Contract: Permanent Hours: 37/week (Mon–Thurs: 08:30–16:30, Fri: 08:30–16:00) Salary: £31,050/annum + standby/overtime potential
About The Role
Join Southern Water’s customer-facing frontline operations team to safeguard the quality, continuity, and reliability of our water network. As a Water Network Inspector, you’ll:
- Deliver unparalleled service to household and industrial customers.
- Respond to emergencies swiftly, resolve issues proactively, and non-disruptively.
- Mobilise for shutdowns, inspections, and repairs—ensuring high controls and clean water standards.
- Embrace outdoor work under all weather conditions, balancing independence with team accountability.
Your impact: critical to caring for 5 million customers daily.
Key Responsibilities
Customer-Facing Service
- Deliver courteous, efficient support across all customer tiers (domestic to industrial).
- Be the first response for incidents: assess, act, and escalate where necessary.
Operational Leadership
- Plan and execute rationalised shutdowns to minimise supply disruption.
- Adhere to water quality protection protocols during repairs.

Inspection & Resolution
- Conduct inspections to identify technical or performance issues.
- Directly resolve customer incidents whenever possible.
- Route unresolved complex tasks to service partners or specialist teams.
Proactive Communication
- Liaise with stakeholders (internal/external) to maintain operational agility.
- Escalate incidents timely and transparently, aligning escalation steps to severity.
Requirements
Essential
✔ Valid UK manual driving licence (current + fully licensed). ✔ Comfortable working outdoors in all conditions and independently. ✔ Motivated to unpack complex processes and operate under strict quality controls.
Desirable
🔹 Familiarity/experience with water utilities or mechanical/electrical systems. 🔹 Willingness to progress into training/apprenticeship pathways where applicable.
Standby & Flexibility
- Potential role in 1-in-5-days standby rota (remunerated opportunities available).
