Job Title: Water Plant Maintenance Technician
Department: Water
Reports To: Public Works Director
Pay Range #: $21.53 - $26.92
Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Public Works Director, the Water Plant Maintenance Technician performs preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment, machinery, and facilities essential to the City's drinking water treatment operations. Working under the supervision of experienced staff, this position assists with troubleshooting mechanical systems, completing repairs, maintaining maintenance records, and supporting the safe and reliable operation of the City's water treatment facilities. The position provides opportunities to develop technical skills through on-the-job training while progressively assuming more complex maintenance responsibilities.
Examples Of Work (Essential Functions):
- Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on pumps, motors, blowers, mixers, valves, actuators, water lines, and other equipment associated with drinking water production.
- Conducts routine inspections of treatment plant equipment and identifies maintenance needs before failures occur.
- Troubleshoots mechanical equipment and assists with diagnosing and repairing equipment malfunctions.
- Replaces worn or damaged components and performs adjustments necessary to maintain efficient operation.
- Operates hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, mobile equipment, and specialized maintenance equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Assists in maintaining HVAC equipment and electrical systems under the direction of experienced maintenance personnel.
- Completes preventive maintenance activities according to established schedules.
- Maintains accurate maintenance records, work orders, and inspection reports using the City's asset management software.
- Assists with ordering parts, materials, and maintenance supplies as assigned.
- Coordinates with operations staff to minimize service disruptions while maintenance activities are performed.
- Escorts contractors and vendors working within the facility and serves as a liaison between contractors and supervisory staff when appropriate.
- Operates City vehicles and travels between work locations as required.
- Participates in the department's on-call rotation and responds to after-hours emergencies as required.
- Performs all work in accordance with City policies, safety procedures, and applicable environmental regulations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Abilities, Knowledge, Skills:
- Knowledge of mechanical maintenance principles and equipment repair techniques.
- Knowledge of equipment operation, maintenance practices, and workplace safety procedures.
- Knowledge of water treatment equipment and systems is preferred.
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and maintenance equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, technical drawings, utility plans, safety regulations, and standard operating procedures.
- Ability to maintain accurate maintenance records using computer software or mobile devices.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical equipment and identify maintenance issues.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, and the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
- Ability to work safely in confined spaces and around industrial equipment while following all applicable safety regulations.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical work in a variety of indoor and outdoor weather conditions.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Certificate, License:
- Valid driver’s license.
Required Education And/or Experience:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to obtain a Class I Plant Maintenance Technologist certification within twenty-four (24) months of employment.
Preferred Education And/or Experience:
- One (1) or more years of experience in industrial maintenance, water utilities, HVAC, plumbing, mechanical maintenance, or a related field.
- Associate degree or vocational training in water technology, mechanical maintenance, engineering technology, or a related field.
- Experience operating maintenance management or asset management software.
- Experience working in a municipal utility or industrial facility.
Supervision:
- None.
Working Conditions
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in a water treatment facility and surrounding infrastructure. Duties involve exposure to varying weather conditions, mechanical equipment, electrical systems, chemicals used in water treatment, confined spaces, elevated work areas, and moderate to high noise levels. Employees may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency call-outs.

Physical Requirements
Work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling equipment and materials. The employee must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis, with heavier lifting performed using proper equipment or team assistance. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to distinguish colors necessary for maintenance and operational tasks.
