Job Title: Water Sports Instructor
Contract: Permanent
Type of Employment: Full Time
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Salary: £24,000- £27,746 per annum
Location: HMS Excellent, Whale Island, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, PO28ER
Job Overview
The role is for a multi water sport instructor. This involves working as part of a team to deliver National Governing Body (NGB) courses to customers who expect a high standard of service. Responsibilities include maintaining and carrying out repairs on watercraft, providing safety boat cover when required, launching and recovering craft, and conducting regular checks and maintenance on life jackets and buoyancy aids. The position offers opportunities for professional development and upskilling in relevant qualifications. All instructors will be expected to be proficient in RYA and Paddle UK disciplines.
Essential Qualifications
You must have one of the following:
- RYA Dinghy Instructor
- Paddle Sport/SUP Coach
Desirable Qualifications
- RYA Senior Instructor
- Keelboat or Multihull endorsement
- Safetyboat qualification
- RYA Powerboat Instructor
- VHF Operator's Licence, and a clean driving licence
The role also requires working within the safety framework established by Mitie, National Governing Bodies, and relevant water authorities.

As representatives of the wider Mitie team, instructors must display a positive attitude at all times.
Main Duties
- Delivering RYA Dinghy and Powerboat courses
- Paddle UK Kayak, Canoe, and Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) courses
- Running taster sessions for paddle sports, dinghy sailing
- Providing safety boat cover for both recreational activities and training sessions
- Completing life jacket maintenance and launching and recovering craft using a tractor
- Assisting with the annual boat maintenance period during the Winter
- Completing a minimum amount of overtime per seasonal month
What We Are Looking For
The ideal candidate will be a qualified RYA Instructor or Paddle UK coach, capable of delivering NGB-accredited courses and taster sessions across a range of water sports, including dinghy sailing, powerboating, kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. The role requires an individual who can work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, as is the physical fitness required to perform the core responsibilities in accordance with NGB standards.
