Water Systems Mechanic I

Water Systems Technician I – Water Department, Plant Operations Division

City of Fort Worth, TX


Pay & Hours

  • Pay Range: $21.26 per hour
  • Work Schedule: Shift work (varying hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays)

About the Role

The City of Fort Worth, one of the fastest-growing large cities in the U.S., seeks a Water Systems Technician I to join its Water Department Plant Operations Division.

Plant Operations oversees:

  • 5 water treatment plants
  • 1 wastewater treatment plant
  • Multiple lift stations, tanks, pump stations
  • Large metering infrastructure for Fort Worth and customer cities

This hands-on role focuses on day-to-day maintenance and operations of critical water and wastewater facilities, alongside professional development opportunities for career growth.


Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain water treatment plant equipment (pumps, motors, feeders, valves)
  • Conduct routine lab analyses to assess plant efficiency and operational metrics
  • Assist with equipment and facility maintenance (lubrication, minor repairs, etc.)
  • Monitor plant systems to ensure compliance with safety protocols
  • Record data from gauges, meters, and test charts
  • Support mechanical teams in maintaining mechanical and electrical systems

Environmental & Physical Demands:

  • Heavy physical labor (lifting up to 100 lbs, frequent standing/working on ladders/beds)
  • Work in confined or hazardous spaces (exposure to chemicals, extreme temperatures, noise, vibrations)
  • Required to complete tasks while ensuring workplace safety

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED certification
  • Valid driver’s license (able to drive city vehicles as required)
  • Water or Wastewater Class D License (or ability to obtain within 30 days if selected)
  • Passes pre-employment drug screen and physical exam

Preferred Qualifications

  • Water or Wastewater Class C License (or ability to obtain within 3 years)
  • Prior experience in water or wastewater utility environments
