Job Overview

A Water Systems Mechanic-I position is available with the City of Fort Worth Water Department Plant Operation Division. Plant Operations is responsible for five Water Treatment Plants, one Wastewater Treatment Plant, one Dryer Facility and multiple lift stations, tanks, pump stations, and large meters for the City of Fort Worth as well as Customer Cities.

The Water Systems Mechanic-I will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of the equipment used for treatment, storage and pumping of drinking water to the citizens of Fort Worth and its wholesale customers. This position offers opportunity for training and development to advance your career if motivated and eager to learn.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED certification
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Must pass Drug Screen, and Physical screening

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous mechanical experience
  • Previous experience working in a water utility
  • Water/wastewater plant or field environment

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform preventative maintenance, repair and installation on plant structures including piping, engines, blowers, pumps, valves and other assorted water and water treatment and pumping equipment
  • Cleaning chemical leaks and collect debris
  • Operate hand tools, welding machine, air compressor, forklift and other equipment
  • Assist in complex construction projects for large scale plant operation and follow work plans and schedules
  • Maintains plant maintenance equipment. Adds oil or grease to components as needed
  • Working Conditions and Physical Demand as stated on official City job description

Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases, vibrations, chemicals, oils and workspace restrictions.

Heavy Work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
