Job Summary
This position is responsible for performing general duties on the maintenance of plant equipment, facilities, vehicles and grounds.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Able to operate and maintain riding mowers, push mowers, trimmers and related lawn care equipment.
- Able to maintain appearance and cleanliness of plant structures and equipment by painting and general cleaning duties.
- Ability to operate various power or hand tools as needed and maintains tools in operating condition.
- Able to perform labor in wet, semi-confined areas.
- Maintains accountability of tools and maintenance equipment throughout the plant.
- Keep simple maintenance records.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge Required By The Position
- Ability to perform manual labor.
- Skill and ability to operate and mechanically service designated machinery, tools and equipment.
- Skill and ability to carry out assigned tasks.
Supervisory Controls
The Water Works Superintendent assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Complexity/Scope Of Work
The purpose of this position is to perform general duties in the maintenance of water treatment plant equipment, buildings, vehicles and grounds. Successful performance helps ensure the provision of safe drinking water for all customers.

Physical Demands/ Work Environment
Work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
Work is typically performed inside water treatment facilities, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to machinery with moving parts, insects or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
Supervisory And Management Responsibility
None.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must possess and maintain a valid South Dakota driver’s license.
Residency
All new hires must reside within 40 miles of city limits unless specific approval of City Manager.
