Role Summary
We are seeking an experienced Wheeled Excavator Operator to join our operations team. The successful applicant will operate wheeled excavators on customer sites and depots, performing safe, efficient earthworks, material handling, and ancillary tasks. This role demands competent machine operation, strong site awareness, strict adherence to health & safety procedures, and a professional, customer-facing approach.
Key Responsibilities

- Conduct pre-start and post-shift machine inspections, complete operator checklists, and report defects or damage to depot or site supervisors promptly.
- Ensure proper fitting, use, and secure storage of attachments (buckets, grabs, breakers, etc.) in accordance with manufacturer guidance and company procedures.
- Work within site safety rules, customer inductions, and method statements, identifying hazards and implementing controls (e.g., safe access, exclusion zones, and service protection).
- Load/unload machines onto transport vehicles where required, assist with plant securing, and confirm transit readiness with transport colleagues.
- Maintain professional communication with site personnel, supervisors, and Flannery contacts to align on daily tasks, priorities, and site-specific requirements.
- Accurately complete paperwork and digital records, including timesheets, equipment checklists, site reports, and incident/near-miss forms.
- Keep machines in clean, serviceable condition, perform basic routine maintenance and refuelling, and liaise with workshop staff for repairs.
- Strictly follow traffic management, site vehicle segregation rules, and ensure safe operation near pedestrians and other plant.
- Assist depot activities and other plant operations during quieter periods, including site setup, cleaning, and basic stores duties as directed.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
