About the Role
A career where you make a real difference! Every day is different. One moment you could be responding to an emergency. The next, you could be helping someone stay safe in their own home.
Being a firefighter is about protecting people, supporting communities, and working as part of a trusted team. It is a challenging role, but also one of the most rewarding careers you can choose.
At Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, we are proud to serve our communities. We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds - whether you are starting your career or looking for a new direction.
If you are motivated to help others and willing to learn, this could be the role for you.
What you’ll do
In this role, you will:
- Respond to emergencies such as fires, road traffic collisions, floods and rescues
- Work in communities to help prevent emergencies and reduce risk
- Provide safety advice
- Support vulnerable people to stay safe and independent
- Work closely with other emergency services and partner organisations
This role is physically and mentally demanding. You will work in challenging environments and may attend distressing or traumatic incidents. You will be trained and supported to deal with these situations as part of a professional team.
No previous firefighting experience is needed - we provide full training.
What we’re looking for
Reasons to use Rodeo
I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
