Fixed-Term Wigs & Make-Up Technician – The Royal Ballet and Opera

Position Overview

  • Fixed-Term Contract: Until 31 August 2027
  • Hours: Full-time (42.5 hours/week)
  • Salary: £42,571.31 per annum
  • Location: Covent Garden, London

Located at Covent Garden, this iconic venue serves as a nerve centre for three quarters of its audiences—extending its cultural reach across the UK and worldwide.

Our Technical, Production, and Costume Department is critical to delivering outstanding performances. We are seeking an experienced Wigs & Make-Up Technician to join our team.


The Role

As a Wigs & Make-Up Technician, you will:

  • Craft wigs and apply styling (including textured hair techniques, locks, and braiding).
  • Design and execute high-standard makeup, including theatrical/special effects.
  • Prepare deliveries for Royal Ballet, Royal Opera, and affiliated productions (live, media, TV).
  • Maintain customer service excellence for professional theatre stakeholders.
  • Comply with Health & Safety standards (theatre risks, risk assessments).

Key Responsibilities

Ensure consistent, top-tier performance quality:

  • Wig-making and styling (shaping, extensions).
  • Hair cutting, boundary Heraldry, chemicals application.
  • Makeup/textured application (ballet/opera demarcations, realism).
  • Special effects training: Wound effects, facial prosthetics, animatronics knowledge.
  • On-site coordination: Integrating costume/performance nuances.
  • ** जानकारी प्रसारिता and visual urgency.responsibility for upkeep of tools and cleanup maintenance.

Requirements

  • Proven success in wigs and makeup for major opera/ballet companies.
  • Extensive experience in wig preparation techniques (refinements: scalping, creating texture, adjustments).
  • Hands-on expertise in textured hair (e.g. braids, body locks).
  • Advanced skill in translating hair/makeup designs and understanding hair types.
  • Experience managing backstage operations (logistics, performer liaising).
  • Health & Safety proficiency (aspects to consider occupational hazards).
  • Willingness to participate in DBS checks.
