About The Role
Join BT’s Wireless Research Team and help shape the future of radio access and Wi-Fi networks. Our work explores emerging wireless technologies designed to enhance network performance, efficiency, resilience, and flexibility—enabling new services for BT and its customers. We collaborate across:
- Modelling & simulation
- Lab experimentation
- Field trials
- Standards engagement
- Industry partnerships
to drive wireless innovation and influence technical direction.
What You’ll Be Doing
Your core responsibilities will include:
- Leadership: Drive applied research projects in wireless connectivity—guiding technical direction from initial investigation to proof-of-concept, trajectory toward standards influence, trials, or adoption.
- Strategic Focus: Identify key technology questions in cellular, Wi-Fi and broader wireless connectivity, turning them into research activities. Actively contribute to modelling, analysis, experimentation and deliver clear recommendations.
- Industry Insight: Build deep expertise in emerging wireless trends, supplier roadmaps, standards evolution, and network architecture—ensuring strategic relevance and technical credibility.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Senior-level technical expertise in wireless communications, including a profound understanding of:
- Mobile ecosystem
- Supplier landscape
- Standards activity
- Technology roadmaps / evolution
- Deep technical knowledge of mobile network architecture, covering planning, deployment, operation, and future-proofing.
- Experience leading applied research, advanced engineering or technology development projects, spanning:
- Problem formulation
- Evidence generation
- Proof-of-concept development
- Recommendations/adoption strategies

Desirable Skills & Experience
- Collaborative & analytical: Strong hands-on technical judgement—assessing feasibility, maturity, risk, complexity, performance tradeoffs, and business value.
- Communication: Ability to simplify complex technical concepts for expert and non-expert audiences.
- Leadership: Proven technical mentoring ability, committed to high-quality research outcomes.
- Standards-relevant experience:
- Engagement with 3GPP, IEEE 802.11, Wi-Fi Alliance, or equivalent organisations.
- Direct involvement in standards features, work items, or ecosystem initiatives.
- Industry awareness: Curious about evolving mobile, Wi-Fi, and wireless systems trends.
- Hands-on expertise:
- Testbeds, wireless labs, experimental platforms → professional familiarity.
- Simulation environments or field trials → significant hands-on experience.
- Commercial insight: Skilled in techno-economic analysis, evaluating:
- Costs
- Deployment complexity
- Operational impact & commercial potential.
