Hours: 19 hours per week, 10 working days a month

Overview

West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) is the second largest fire and rescue service in England, serving an area of 902km square and a population of some three million.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join WMFS Training (BEST team) for a motivated, committed and creative individual who possesses the ability to deliver technical instruction practically, both in the classroom and virtually to internal and external customers. You will have the skills to research fire and safety legislation and creatively develop material we can use to make our business community safer.

Applicants will need to demonstrate an excellent understanding of the organisational strategy to support, drive and positively promote all organisational objectives. You will need the qualities that enable you to work from your own initiative and as part of a team. You will need the confidence to present to external customers from a wide range of sectors, including Formula 1, Marks and Spencer, and Historic England, not forgetting independent safety professionals.

You will promote a positive and inclusive team culture, enabling others to maximise their full potential to be as efficient and effective as possible by creating the right environment in the workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and update knowledge of fire legislation/first aid
  • Maintain and test training equipment
  • Complete necessary qualifications to deliver present and future courses
  • Creatively design and deliver theoretical and practical regular/bespoke fire training courses to external and internal customers, including but not limited to:
    • Fire extinguisher training
    • Fire Marshall training
    • Industrial firefighting training
    • Fire safety talks
    • Evacuation chair training
  • Attend high profile client meetings and communicate accurate information to WMFS Training team
  • Assume lead instructor role for one Primary Authority Partner/customer
  • Use personal vehicle to attend courses (casual mileage will be paid)
  • Be prepared to work/stay away from home two to four nights a month (overnight allowance paid)

Experience and skills

Essential

  • Have a good working knowledge of fire safety legislation and its application in a variety of workplace environments
  • Possess a Light Vehicle Driving Licence
  • Have experience of operational firefighting
  • Have good communication skills and be able to present information in a logical, concise and informative manner
  • Have skills and knowledge and ability to use Microsoft O365 applications including PowerPoint
  • Can identify and adapt training to the needs of individual students
  • Be prepared to work away from home and to travel to other locations within the UK to deliver training, sometimes working out of hours and staying away overnight
  • Have a reasonable level of physical fitness and manual handling ability to carry out fire demonstration kit assembly and handling of extinguishers
  • Can identify new training and commercial opportunities with professional bodies
  • Have a basic understanding of H&S risk assessments

Desirable

  • Possess a teaching/presentation skills qualification or practical experience in training and/or teaching
