WordPress Engineer / Architect

Tier 1 Financial Services Organisation | Hybrid Working | Contract Opportunity

A leading Tier 1 financial services organisation is seeking an experienced WordPress Engineer / Architect to support a high-profile internal communications platform as it transitions from a third-party vendor into internal ownership.

This role requires deep expertise in WordPress development alongside strong knowledge of platform architecture, performance optimisation, caching strategies, scalability, and governance. The successful candidate will work closely with global delivery teams while providing hands-on technical leadership and oversight from the UK.

Location: London, Birmingham, Sheffield, or Edinburgh

Working Pattern: Hybrid – 2 days per month in the office


The Role

As a WordPress Engineer / Architect, you will be responsible for designing, developing, optimising, and governing enterprise-grade WordPress solutions. You will play a key role in shaping platform architecture, driving performance improvements, supporting platform migrations, and ensuring the environment remains secure, scalable, and fit for future growth.

This opportunity is ideal for someone who combines strong hands-on development expertise with strategic architectural capability and experience delivering solutions within large, complex enterprise environments.


Key Responsibilities

  • Design and architect enterprise-scale WordPress platforms and solutions.
  • Develop and maintain custom WordPress themes and plugins.
  • Lead and support WordPress migration, upgrade, and transformation initiatives.
  • Establish and promote platform governance, security standards, and development best practices.
  • Drive performance optimisation and scalability across the platform.
  • Design and implement effective caching strategies.
  • Analyse, troubleshoot, and resolve application performance issues.
  • Collaborate with globally distributed engineering and delivery teams.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and architectural guidance.
  • Support modern software delivery practices, including CI/CD and automated deployments.

Required Skills & Experience

Core WordPress Expertise

  • Advanced WordPress development experience.
  • Custom theme and plugin development.
  • WordPress architecture and platform design.
  • Experience managing WordPress multisite environments.
  • Strong understanding of WordPress security best practices.
  • Proven experience delivering WordPress upgrades and migrations.

Performance & Optimisation

  • WordPress performance tuning and optimisation.
  • Core Web Vitals and page speed optimisation.
  • Experience implementing caching strategies, including:
    • Server-side caching
    • Object caching
    • Page caching
    • CDN integration
  • Hands-on experience with Redis, Memcached, Varnish, and similar technologies.
  • MySQL database optimisation and performance tuning.
  • Application performance monitoring and troubleshooting.
  • Load testing, capacity planning, and scalability planning.
