Role Overview

We are looking for a reliable and hardworking Yard Man / Yard Operative to support the day-to-day running of our yard. The successful candidate will help keep the yard clean, safe, organised, and efficient while assisting with loading, unloading, stock movement, vehicle movements, equipment checks, and general operational duties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain a clean, tidy, safe, and well-organised yard at all times.
  • Assist with loading and unloading vehicles, deliveries, materials, equipment, and machinery.
  • Move, store, and stack stock safely and correctly in designated areas.
  • Carry out basic checks on vehicles, plant, tools, and equipment, reporting any defects or damage promptly.
  • Support drivers, warehouse staff, engineers, and site teams as required.
  • Prepare goods, materials, or equipment for collection, delivery, or dispatch.
  • Assist with stock control, counting, checking, and recording returned or outgoing items.
  • Operate forklifts or other yard equipment where trained, licensed, and authorised.
  • Follow company health and safety procedures, including safe manual handling and correct use of PPE.
  • Report hazards, spills, unsafe conditions, near misses, or maintenance issues to management.
  • Carry out general yard duties, including sweeping, washing down, waste disposal, and basic maintenance tasks.

Skills and Experience

  • Previous experience in a yard, warehouse, transport, construction, manufacturing, plant, or similar environment is essential.
  • Forklift licence is essential.
  • Good awareness of health and safety in a busy working environment.
  • Physically fit and comfortable with manual handling and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Reliable, punctual, practical, and willing to get stuck in.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills and a positive, can-do attitude.
  • Basic mechanical or maintenance knowledge would be beneficial.
  • Full UK driving licence would be advantageous, depending on site requirements.
