Metcalfe Plant Hire is one of the North of England’s largest construction plant hire businesses. Based in Penrith, Cumbria, we are currently recruiting for a full-time Yard Operative / Delivery Driver to join the team.
The Role
Based at our Gilwilly premises in Penrith, you will report on a daily basis to the Plant Director and Plant Hire Manager, and you will form part of our Plant Hire Team which provides both operated and non-operated construction plant and vehicles to both internal and external customers.
As a Yard Operative you will assist in keeping the yard and machinery clean, tidy and well presented. You will be expected to provide a professional service to both internal and external customers and contacts. As a Delivery Driver you will be expected to ensure delivery and collections are dealt with in a timely manner.
Primary Duties & Tasks
- Promote safe working processes and ensure that all persons in the yard area are operating within the health & safety policies and procedures of Metcalfe Plant Hire Ltd.
- Ensure that all vehicle and personnel movements in the yard are completed in a safe manner and that all necessary PPE is worn by all personnel in the yard.
- Greet all visitors and customers in a courteous manner and act as an ambassador for Metcalfe Plant Hire Ltd at all times.
- To help oversee all plant on and off hires from the yard onto the Mobile Insphire system and in conjunction with the Plant Hire Office.
- Inspect all plant prior to it leaving the yard to ensure that it meets the highest possible standards of cleanliness etc.
- Check all plant leaving the yard meets all testing and certification requirements and that all necessary documents (including handbooks etc) are despatched with the item of plant.
- Inspect for damage & cleanliness all items of plant returning to the yard after completion of hire & report to the Hire Desk and Workshop any items that require repair or cleaning. Including recording such requirements on damage reports and taking supporting photographs, as required.
- Liaise with the Workshop Manager to help prioritise repairs in line with known hire commitments.
- Manage and supervise the Yard Delivery Driver/Yard Operative including organising their day-to-day workload and duties, including due consideration to plant delivery requirements of the Hire Desk.
- Ensure that all customer queries notified to you for action are fully resolved in a timely manner
- Ensure that the yard is kept in a safe, tidy and manageable condition at all times.

- IT literate – Training will be given on the Plant Hire System if required
- You must be a well-organised individual, with the ability to work under pressure and on your own.
- Ability to prioritise tasks and meet tight deadlines in a busy yard environment.
- Plant hire background/experience with a good knowledge of construction equipment (preferable)
- Effective communicator
- Demonstrated initiative and high attention to detail
- Full Clean driving licence
We are ideally looking for an individual with Plant experience, but training will be given to the right candidate.
