Youth Justice Service Practitioner – Suffolk County Council

Location: West Suffolk House, Western Way, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP33 3YU or InfoBar, Constantine House, Constantine Road, Ipswich, IP1 2DH (Hybrid)

Salary: £34,434 – £40,777 per annum (prorata for part-time)

Hours: 37 hours per week

Contract:

  • Fixed-term (until 31 March 2029, subject to external funding from the Ministry of Justice)
  • Secondment possible

Your Responsibilities

Our team seeks passionate professionals to make a real difference through youth justice. You will:

  • Support young people and their families under the MoJ Turnaround Programme, preventing youth offending and fostering rehabilitation.
  • Deliver innovative rehabilitation and intervention programs tailored to young people’s needs.
  • Engage directly with victims of youth offences and their families.
  • Provide court support services, including weekends and bank holidays (upon training and eligibility).
  • Contribute to community safety initiatives and safeguarding efforts.
  • Collaborate with specialist services and multi-agency networks to create holistic support pathways.
  • Build strong relationships with at-risk young people using empathy, collaboration, and persuasion.
  • Demonstrate resilience, adaptability, and a belief in rehabilitation’s transformative power.
  • Apply strong assessment and casework skills to guide young people toward positive change.
  • Commit to advancing youth justice reform in Suffolk.

About the Team: Suffolk Youth Justice Service (SYJS)

The Suffolk Youth Justice Service (SYJS) works with:

  • Children and young people in or at risk of entering the Youth Justice System.
  • Parents, carers, and victims of youth crime, operating as a multi-agency partnership hosted by Suffolk County Council.

Core aims:

  • Prevent offending by young people.
  • Protect the public from harm.
  • Champion the safety, wellbeing, and future ambition of every young person engaged.

Operational realities:

  • SYJS runs 7 days a week, including evenings until 9pm, and conducts home visits to meet national safeguarding standards.

Flexible commitments:

  • You may occasionally work evenings/weekends, with access to:
    • Flexi-time.
    • Time Off in Lieu (TOIL) for unpreferred shifts.
  • Participation in a Saturday court rota, with additional payment or TOIL at your option.
