Job Description

Salary: £26,225 - £33,066 per annum
Hours: 37 hours per week
Contract: Permanent, Full time
Location: Preston & South Ribble District

About the Role

The Targeted Youth Support team, part of Lancashire County Council's Children and Family Wellbeing Service, are looking to recruit 1 full-time, 37-hour, permanent Youth Support Worker for the Preston & South Ribble District. If you are enthusiastic, organized, and passionate about making a difference and changing young people’s lives, this is the perfect opportunity for you.

About the Service

The service is a key contributor to the prevention and early intervention/early help agenda for Lancashire County Council. It enables young people to succeed by providing high-quality informal education opportunities to promote their personal and social development. It supports young people who are challenged in education, their communities, or home life to ensure a successful transition to adulthood.

The TYS team is the biggest employer in the UK of JNC qualified youth workers and we are immensely proud of this. We follow the Pink Book terms and conditions, with more leave due to the unsocial hours we can work. You will also, as part of JNC, be on a Teachers Pension if you so desire.

About Youth Work

Youth work focuses on personal and social development – the skills and attributes of young people – rather than to ‘fix a problem’. It is an educational process that engages with young people in a curriculum that deepens a young person’s understanding of themselves, their community, and the world in which they live and supports them to proactively bring about positive changes.

Role Responsibilities

The Youth Support Worker's role is to contribute to the delivery of youth work opportunities, in Lancashire the Targeted Youth Support Team deliver core youth work, these are:

  • Detached/outreach
  • Special Educational Needs & Disability session
  • Youth Voice including a Local Area Youth Council
  • Safe Spaces offering a targeted youth places and spaces
  • LGBTQ+ and/or specific issue-based groups

Youth Support Workers will report to a Professional Range Youth Worker and will work closely with other youth work staff and volunteers to maximize opportunities for young people to access social and personal development as well as learning opportunities.

The main purpose of the role is to initiate and develop relationships with 11 to 19-year-olds and up to 25-year-olds for young people with vulnerabilities. Working directly with targeted young people to enable them to broaden their horizons and involvement in positive activities. By designing and developing youth work responses underpinned by the 4 cornerstones of youth work, equality, participation, education, and empowerment, and delivery of the Youth Offer.

You will deliver face-to-face work in accordance with JNC terms and conditions, including trips, activity days, and residentials. You will be required to travel across the districts and at times across the county, so access to a vehicle is essential.

As part of the role, you will be required to undertake your level 3 youth work qualification. If you have not got one, you will be supported by Lancashire County Council to complete this in terms of time to complete it and the cost of the course.
