Embedded Software Engineer
Join the engineering team at Deep Sea Electronics Ltd and design high-quality embedded software for industrial Control and Automation applications. This role involves real-time control, industrial communications, and functional safety (IEC 61508/IEC 62061), delivering robust solutions for power generation, manufacturing, utilities, and process industries. You’ll work closely across the entire product lifecycle—from requirements and architecture through implementation, verification, certification, and field support.
Requirements

Expertise in C/C++ for microcontroller development

Familiarity with functional safety:
- IEC 61508 (and/or IEC 62061)
- Safety concepts: SIL (Safety Integrity Level), SFF (Safety Function Failure), PFH (Proof Factor Hazard)
- Safety planning, verification, and lifecycle documentation

Knowledge of Industrial Automation principles:
- Control theory basics (PID control, feedback loops)
- Sensor/actuator interfaces, transducers, and signal conditioning
- Electrical principles and low-level hardware integration

Experience with Agile/Waterfall methodologies (stage-gated development)

Ability to collaborate closely with electronics engineers on embedded system design

Comfortable working to high standards in a fast-moving environment

Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and performance estimation skills

Ability to break down tasks into actionable work packages with clear estimates

Can translate requirements into technical specifications

Software development experience:
- Real-time operating systems (RTOS)
- Unit-testing frameworks (e.g., Jenkins-integrated testing)
- Source control (Git), build tooling, bug tracking, and CI/CD pipelines

Education: BEng degree (or higher) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (or equivalent)
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Design & Implementation
- Develop C/C++ software for embedded devices (bare-metal and RTOS) used in industrial control systems
- Design real-time control algorithms (PID, state-based/fuzzy logic) for sensors, actuators, power systems, and machine controls
Embedded Systems & Protocols
- Create work breakdown structures in Jira for task decomposition and planning
- Integrate systems with PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA
- Implement and validate protocols: Modbus (RTU/TCP), CAN/CANopen, J1939, Ethernet/IP, PROFINET, OPC UA, RS-232/RS-485
Safety & Compliance
- Apply IEC 61508/IEC 62061 functional safety practices:
- SIL Determination & HARA (Hazard Analysis), FTA (Fault Tree Analysis), FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis)
- Safety Requirements Specifications (SRS) and verification artifacts

Quality & Development Culture
- Enforce coding standards (MISRA C/C++) and use static analysis tools
- Conduct design reviews, code reviews, and unit/integration tests
- Develop engineering documentation:
- Architecture designs, interface control documents, and safety lifecycle artifacts
Collaboration & Support
- Collaborate with hardware Engineers, test teams, cybersecurity and product management to deliver cohesive solutions
- Support system integration, commissioning, and international field diagnostics (UK & overseas travel required)
Process Improvement & Mentoring
- Champion continuous improvement in toolchains, workflows, and CI/CD (Git, Jira, automated testing)
- Mentor junior engineers through design reviews, code sessions, and knowledge-sharing
Maintenance & Product Sustainment
- Participate in existing product sustaining activities:
- Defect resolution & post-release fixes
- Feature enhancements and stability improvements
