Hire Manager – Fixed Term (Until 31st August 2027, London – Dartford)

About the Role

To reinforce our London branch’s growing success, Selwood is recruiting a Hire Manager on a fixed-term contract until August 31, 2027.

The Hire Manager will lead the branch’s hire operation, ensuring smooth handling of customer requests, asset availability, and profit-driven decision-making. You will:

  • Oversee daily hire operations, directing the team to deliver orders efficiently.
  • Maximise profitability by securing optimal rates for Selwood’s assets.
  • Collaborate with branch teams and wider operations to maintain service excellence.

This supervisory role combines logistics, customer service, and commercial acumen—ideal for someone with a hands-on approach and hunger for growth.


Key Responsibilities

Operational Excellence

  • Coordinate branch transport logistics, ensuring efficient resource allocation.
  • Maintain accurate contract documentation and compliance with systems.
  • Prepare the Hire Team with equipment and workflows to meet outstanding demands.

Customer & Commercial Leadership

  • Liaise with operational teams (area/hub) to refine workflows and meet client requirements.
  • Ensure damage/loss charges are accurately communicated and agreed with customers.
  • Drive sales opportunities by promptly relaying branch leads to the Sales Team.
  • Follow up on dormant accounts with proactive telephone outreach.

Upskilling and Team Development

  • Foster positive customer interactions, embodying a consistent, solution-focused attitude.
  • Provide constructive feedback to the team, encouraging innovation and development.
  • Leverage customer insights to propose revenue-growing ideas.

Requirements

Essential Criteria

  • Proven supervisory or managerial experience in a hire/rental business (or similar).
  • Demonstrated ability to run a high-volume hire desk in a fast-paced environment.
  • Logistics/construction/water utilities experience—highly beneficial.
  • Proficiency in rental/hire systems and managing multiple software packages.
  • Intermediate-level MS Office skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and familiarity with Teams for video calls.

  • Highly self-motivated, with independent problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong time management and ability to prioritise tasks dynamically.
  • Mastery of multi-tasking amid competing deadlines and pressure.
  • Resilient communication: professionalism in high-stress situations with internal/ external stakeholders.
  • Negotiation-influencing skills, confident in up-selling Selwood’s products.
