About the Role
The School of Biomedical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences, part of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, is seeking a passionate and committed Lecturer in Food and Human Nutrition on a permanent basis.
The School brings together strengths in:
- Nutrition and dietetics
- Sport and exercise science
- Biomedical sciences
With significant investment in new facilities, including:
- £57 million upgrade of the Dame Margaret Barbour Building (teaching and labs)
- State-of-the-art Sports Centre
As a Lecturer, you will:
- Develop and deliver high-quality teaching for the AfN-accredited BSc (Hons) Human Nutrition and BSc (Hons) Nutrition with Food Marketing programmes.
- Contribute to UG and PG degree programmes across the School.
- Be responsible for assessment marking, project supervision (UG/PG), pastoral support, and administration as required.
Research duties include:
- A strong independent research profile aligned with priority areas such as:
- Nutrition and metabolic disease
- Brain health and ageing
- Childhood nutrition
- Nutrition and cancer
- Contribution to the Human Nutrition and Exercise Research Centre.
Formal qualifications:
- PhD (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline.
- Prior teaching experience.

Key Accountabilities
Teaching & Learning
- Deliver high-quality, engaging teaching aligned with University standards.
- Mentor and advise students throughout their studies.
- Set, mark, and digitise assessment using online frameworks.
- Contribute to curriculum development.
- Foster a research-informing educational environment.
- Promote lifelong learning for students, both in and beyond their studies.
Research
- Conduct research at international standards in Food and Human Nutrition.
- Enhance the School’s research profile and the Human Nutrition and Exercise Research Centre’s.
- Secure external funding and publish outputs.
- Demonstrate real-world impact through collaborative partnerships.
- Supervise postgraduate research (PGR) students.
Other Duties
- Advance the vision, mission, and strategy of the University and School.
- Engage actively in School communities and projects.
- Commit to equality, diversity, inclusion, ethics, and sustainability.
- Support national/international disciplinary development.
- Lead administrative roles such as:
- Module Leader
- Year Tutor
- Programme Director
- Research Director
- Outreach Coordinator
- Contribute to Faculty/Wide projects, working groups, and committees.
The Person – Essential
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Research-led teaching experience in core nutritional sciences, with a strong use of technology.
- Demonstrated research funding capability.
- Track record of international/public-beneficial publications.
- Proven ability to engage with external stakeholders and create impact.
- Evidence of an international research profile (e.g., publications, professional affiliations, awards).
- Experience supervising Postgraduate Research (PGR) students.
- Ability to design and supervise UG/PG research projects.
- Experience from settings such as:
- Business
- Third sector
- Policy (desirable)

Qualifications
- Honours degree (2:1 or above) in Food and Human Nutrition or a related subject.
- PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field.
- Membership of a relevant professional body (where applicable, desirable).
- A Postgraduate teaching qualification or Advance HE Fellowship accreditation (where applicable, desirable).
