Linux Software Development Engineer
Linux Software Development Engineer – Traffic Light Controller Systems (UK Focus)
About the Role
Join SWARCO, the leader in intelligent traffic management, and contribute to the ongoing development of cutting-edge UK traffic light controller software. This permanent (Permanent) role based in Leicester will see you work intimately with global software teams, specialising in Linux-based solutions for the world’s most widely deployed traffic infrastructure.
We’re looking for a creative, pragmatist, with expertise in C++ and Linux software development to bridge technology and practical UK road regulations in this technical and collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities

Core Development & Enhancement
- Drive the development of Linux software for the UK deployment of SWARCO’s global traffic light controller.
- Co-develop supporting tools, primarily using Python, alongside C++-based systems.
- Implement and dokuplate optimised code & solutions (potentially extending into GoLang).

Regulatory & Systems Thinking
- Deeply analyse UK traffic control regulations and local market demands.
- Translate customer/compliance requirements into formal functional documentation for development.
- Advise on regulatory updates and ensure system resilience under UK road conditions.

Testing, Security & Quality Assurance
- Maintain elevated software quality & security standards, supporting leadership initiatives.
- Design best practices tests and process improvements, leveraging agile methodologies.

Project Collaboration & International Workflows
- Collaborate with engineering teams across UK and international offices, adapting both local needs and global solutions.
- Streamline Git-based workflows and iteration processes across geographically dispersed teams.

Requirements
Technical Skills & Experience
- Degree in Computer Science (or equivalent qualification) with a 2:1 grade or better.
- Minimum 2 years’ hands-on experience in Linux software development.
- Proficiency with C++, with scope to extend into Python (plus familiarity with GoLang considered a plus).
- Version control mastery: hands-on working experience with Git-based workflows (GitLab, GitHub, etc.).
- Experience with software deployment & debugging, including CI/CD pipelines.
