About the Role

As part of this evolution, the Estates & Facilities Directorate is strengthening the specialist expertise that underpins the performance and resilience of our mechanical infrastructure.
We are now seeking a skilled and proactive Mechanical Engineer to help maintain, optimise and future-proof our mechanical systems across a complex and diverse campus environment.
Role Responsibilities
As a Mechanical Engineer within the Estates Operations team, you will:

Carry out inspection, testing, maintenance, and performance optimisation of mechanical systems including:
- HVAC
- Plumbing
- Fire suppression
- Related plant

Diagnose mechanical faults, identify root causes, and deliver effective repairs to ensure continuity of service.

Contribute to the design, planning, installation, and commissioning of mechanical systems for:
- New builds
- Upgrades
- Refurbishment projects

Maintain and update:
- Technical mechanical standards
- Statutory records
- Asset management information across all relevant engineering plant

Ensure legal compliance with mechanical safety legislation, including:
- Completing risk assessments
- Issuing permits to work

Monitor and improve system efficiency, supporting the University’s sustainability goals through:
- Energy-efficient technologies
- Best practices

Collaborate with:
- Building Surveyors
- Electrical Engineers
- Project teams to ensure integrated system performance and successful project outcomes.

Develop and deliver preventive maintenance schedules that:
- Reduce downtime
- Support longevity
- Improve operational reliability

Manage contractors and suppliers, ensuring compliance with:
- Safety
- Quality
- Technical standards

Assist in emergency response for mechanical system failures, contributing to:
- A safe and resilient campus environment
This role is a unique, varied and hands-on position where you will influence both day-to-day operations and long-term system development.
Key Requirements

A relevant degree (or equivalent experience) in mechanical engineering

Relevant professional qualification (e.g., CEng or equivalent) or progression toward it

Hands-on experience in:
- Mechanical engineering
- Estates or facilities management
- Building services
-
Strong technical knowledge of:
- HVAC
- Plumbing
- Fire safety systems
- Additional mechanical infrastructure

Experience in:
- Energy-efficient systems
- Sustainable technologies
- System performance optimisation

Ability to:
- Conduct system testing
- Complete certification procedures
- Follow safe-working protocols

Competence in:
- Reading and preparing mechanical engineering drawings
- Using software (e.g., AutoCAD)
