About the Business Unit – Buildings (BLD)
The Buildings Unit (BLD) operates across the UK and mainland Europe, offering cross-sector skills in:
- Advisory
- Built Environment
- Energy
- Transportation
- Water
We combine local client services with technical leadership across the Group.
Overview of the Role
Are you passionate about improving society through infrastructure? **Mott MacDonald is looking for experienced Principal/Associate Civil Engineers to join our Infrastructure team on high-impact projects across sectors, including:
- Health
- Defence
- Regeneration
- Leisure
This role blends technical excellence with project leadership, requiring:
- Project and team management
- Budget control
- Quality assurance
- Technical mentorship
- Business development contributions
You’ll enjoy autonomy, responsibility for business growth, and mentorship from a team of innovative engineers.
Key Responsibilities
Project & Team Leadership
- Manage projects and multidisciplinary design teams
- Oversee design quality, budgeting, and staff development
- Ensure timely, cost-effective, and high-quality delivery

Technical & Quality Assurance
- Lead early-stage optioneering, feasibility, and detailed design
- Supervise infrastructure projects from conception to operations
- Apply Health & Safety (H&S) and CDM Regulations
- Manage procurement, technical assurance, and risk mitigation
Business Development & Standing Firm Growth
- Support practises in tendering and client-facing commercial responses
- Develop and refine technical and commercial bids
Candidate Requirements
Essential Experience
✅ Professional qualification (ICE, CIHT, PW|I, etc.) ✅ Proven expertise in:
- Infrastructure design (feasibility to detailed design)
- Project management (procurement, budgeting, risk control)
- BIM and digital design tools ✅ Experience in UK public sector infrastructure projects ✅ Ability to check and approve others’ work using technical standards
Key Soft Skills
✅ Strong communication (client-facing, presentations, reports) ✅ Leadership in collaborative, cooperative teams
Competencies (Nice to Have but Beneficial)
- Technical leadership in people/team coaching
- Contract procurement and risk management experience
- Understanding of operational and maintenance impacts of designs
